I should clarify that they're still using IE, don't have iTunes, don't know what WinRAR is.. I'm planning on giving them a few different browsers including Chrome, Torch, and Tor.

Chrome is a good browser, so is Opera.

What does Opera do?

It's just a regular browser. I use it as backup when Chrome is acting up. It's pretty fast.
