a * b^2 = c
b * sqrt(a)= sqrt(c) -
For 48, it would be 4 root 3 since 16 times 3 equals 48 and 16 is a perfect square. You want to find the largest perfect square possible that you can multiply by another number to equal 48.
So you start with the smallest perfect square, 1. 1 times what equals 48? 1 times 48 = 48, but the radical isn't really simplified. Then you try the next perfect square, 4. 4 times what equals 48? 4 times 12. But the radical could still be further simplied. You just keep going through the rest of the perfect squares until you find that the perfect square 16 times 3 equals 48. After you have that, it's written as the square root of 16 times the square root of 3. The square root of 16 can be simplified to 4, so the simplified radical would be 4 root 3. -
Yes, find the largest perfect square possible that will multiply with another number to equal the number in the radical or else you'll have to simplify more.
