well first let it sniff your hand like a dog. then you should lightly pet its forehead. dont slowly move your hand toward the cat or it will feel threatened. then you should try and pet its back around the tail area. if the cat is satisfied it will raise its back up. just pet it on those 2 sweet spots until it's purring loud enough for you to hear. then you can pet in different places such as its stomach, its sides' and under its chin

well sometimes it will try to nibble on your fingers a bit just to get to know you better and it might be trying to bat at your hand when it looks like its about to scratch you but if you truly believe it is going to bite or scratch you, jerk your hand away and give them a certain look. a look that says "don't do that" then try having it sniff your hand again
