When you first sign up, what exactly happens? Like, do you need a username and a name, ooooorr..? -
You'll create a username and password on the website then you download and install the client. The very first time you sign into the client, you will create an in game name that people will see you as. It doesn't have to be the same as your sign in username.
I also suggest when you do the tutorial, you adjust the visual settings to very low to reduce lagging. You can look up where to locate the options while in-game and all that. -

There's a little gear above the mini-map and you click it to adjust the settings on your own.
