Almost four decades, to be exact :) I also read on Wikipedia that Dungeons & Dragons is the ancestor of modern-day role-playing video games.

The rules have changed overall, it's more streamlined in 4th Edition but will probably become more open in D&D Next. The abilities of various creatures and races and classes have been changed, the moral alignment system has changed, class abilities have been balanced and re-balanced, etc.
