  1. The sun crept slowly up the horizon. Horses around you stirred, the scent of dewy grass tickling your nose. You move slowly, with stiff cold limbs still warming up, as you trot gently over to Echo. "Hi, Hawk!" She calls, the winter weather seemingly no effect on her. "Hey." You reply, nuzzling her neck softly. She stamps energetically, barely registering your greeting. "Let's eat! I'm starving..."
  2. Echo whinnied happily, leading you to the willow tree regardless of your reply, a bounce in her step. "Did you hear about the challenge last night?" She whispered to you, glancing around to see if another horse was listening. "No?" You reply, ears tilted forward in curiosity. Echo snorted in disbelief. "It's all anyhorse could talk about! Rumours say that Raven is planning to challenge Oak, in an attempt to gain respect."
  3. Echo nodded, lowering her head to chew the sweet grass. "Are you glad I chose this spot?" You nod in turn, leaning down to eat the dewy blades, nose close to Echo's. Your mind rolled over, rhythmic chewing making a flow in your thought. What if Raven did challenge Oak, and won? How would this effect the herds' staus? Later, you have left Echo to talk with the other mares and are watching a couple of stallions spar playfully.
  4. (ANSWER 1)"Hey, Hawk! Want a go?" You're pulled from your thoughts as a cheerful grey colt named Cliff calls you over. You trot into the mix of stallions, head held high. Cliff nips you lightly then springs away, his expression smug and mischievous. "Come on, then! pick your opponent!" Cliff snorts, tossing his mane at the group, waiting. You walk among the stallions, stiff legged and confident. A quick chestnut colt darts toward you, feigning a kick at your left foreleg. You barely flinch, but buck playfully. "Takes more than that to startle me, Acorn!" You cry, chasing him off, laughing. He snorts, laughing along. The morning passes, the sun climbing over the herds' heads' and towards the horizon as you spar. It is some time before you notice Raven standing, watching you all, his eyes flicking back and forth, but always finding Oak.
  5. (ANSWER 2) As your gaze travels over the group, noting effective techniques, an uneasy feeling cawls over your body. You twitch your tail, turning back to see Raven making his way towards you. He stretches his neck forward, greeting you calmly as you bump noses. Your tension increases, and Raven notices. He smirks slightly, turning to watch the sparring stallions. "Hello, Hawk. Are you thinking of joining?" You shrug, feeling flustered at the unexpected approach. "Perhaps." You match his superior tone, and to your delight, his ears twitch in annoyance. "It's a shame that such wise, loved horses like Oak would waste his energy for a bit of fun, don't you think?
  6. (ANSWER 3) You walk away, swishing your tail lazily. "Hawk!" a young voice cries. You turn to see your younger sister, Frost, as she raced towards you, your mother following slowly behind. "Hawk, will you play with me?" It was a question, but her tone was demanding. "Alright," you laugh, "but I pick games too." She bucked happily in circles around you. "Deal!" You think for a moment, before slowly beginning to count... "One... Two... Three..." Frost squealed, galloping away to hide. You close your eyes as you continue to count. "Four... Five... Six..." Frosts' footsteps faded out of earshot, as you continued on to ten. Fifteen. Then twenty. "I'm coming to find you, Frost!" You call out. "Okay!" Frost calls back from a thicket of shrubs by the edge of the herd. You shake your head and laugh, but walk in a different direction from her hiding spot. "I wonder where you are?" You think aloud. The filly giggled. As you pretend to search behind the willow tree, something makes you shudder. Turning instinctively, you check your surroundings. At last, your eyes rest on Raven, as he stared you dead in the face from a few horse-lengths away. His gaze flicks from you to Oak, sparring with the…
  7. Raven snorted, turning his back to you and walking away, tail flicking in irritation. You shake your head at him, trying to forget his strange, intimidating display, but you couldn't stop the unsettled feeling his attitude had left... That afternoon, you trotted through the herd, looking for Echo. She called you over from the willow, your sister Frost trotting among the low-hanging leaves of the tree. "Hawk!" Frost cried, her white tail flying out behind her as she cantered over to you. "Hey, Snowflake!" You smile, greeting her softly with your nose. Suddenly, a shrill neigh echoed over the valley, and Frost's ears perked at the sound. "Oh. Mothers' calling. I have to go now, Hawk." You nod, resting your chin on her forehead before Frost trotted away, tossing her mane as she went. You watched her go, her joy making your heart sing. "Hey, Hawk?" You turn back to Echo, remembering why you were here. "What is it, Echo?" You heard the concern in her voice as she leaned close to you and whispered. "There's a new rumour. About you. Horses are saying that you're going to challenge Raven."
  8. Echo shook her head. "I don't know. Whatever happens, I think you should leave it. No good comes from encouraging that stallion." You nod, glancing across the valley to see if Raven was watching you. His eyes were burning into yours, and you couldn't help laying your ears back in agitation. He smirked, returning to grazing. Suddenly, a deep call rang across the herd. The Lead Stallion called again, and the herd slowly made its way towards him. You and Echo trot up with the others, side by side. "My herd," the Lead Stallion began, his black mane glossy in the sun. "It has come to my attention that there is a disturbance in our lands. A large pack of strong, daring wolves has entered our territory, and make their way closer every day." Horses gasped, and beside you, Echo pawed the ground nervously. "What does this mean for us? Are you saying that they intend to kill us?" an elder mare asked, her tail flicking in anxiety. The Lead Stallion, his name was Charcoal, sighed, but puffed his chest to share confidence with his herd. "I don't know yet. If they continue to show this threatening impression, we will be forced into action." You frown at his words, worrying about what your herd…
  9. The next morning, you and three other horses are selected for the expedition to find the wolves and evaluate their status. Beside you, a buckskin mare named Skye nickered a greeting as she bumped your nose gently. "Well, this is exciting, isn't it?" she said cheerfully, but you catch the tense undertone in her voice. "Yes, it's going to be interesting!" You reply, sniffing her mane as a friendly gesture. Suddenly, you look up as you notice Echo approaching. She sees you and Skye standing close together, friendly and warm, and a mix of feelings collide on her face. Confusion, anger, sadness, and worst of all, hurt. You freeze, astounded by her reaction and unsure of what you did wrong. Echo turns quickly and trots away before you can react, leaving you dumbfounded. Skye notices your rigid spine, and looks at you questioningly. You shake your mane out, trying to clear your head. "Sorry, just thought I heard some strange noises from the Pine Woods, but it was nothing." Skye snorted. "Don't tell me that! You'll get me thinking the wolves might be nearby!" Later, your group of horses leaves for the expedition. You travel along hidden paths, not often used. Frequently stopping to sniff…
  10. The day came quicker than you expected. After many horses discussed the outcomes last night, you were exhausted and went off to find Echo. She was standing by the willow tree, looking at the stars. The two of you talked for some time, before falling asleep, you chin resting on her back, just like you had since you were foals. She had pointed out that this was probably the last time that the two of you would sleep like this, under this willow tree, under these stars. You had assured her there would be a willow tree in their new home, with even more beautiful stars. Only then had the relisation hit you both, how huge it was to leave this place they grew up in, to leave their home. "It's for the greater good," you had said, but the words were empty of reassurance, and Echo felt it too. Now, you stood by her side, as the herd made its way slowly from the valley, into the Pine Woods, where new scents had emerged. Wolf scents. Horses around you twitched their ears, nostrils flaring and eyes wide as they scanned for any danger. You peak over the heads of others and see Frost and your mother travelling in the centre of the group, among other foals, mothers and expecting mares. You breath…
