Ernest nodded, looking down at the book.

Mahina turned her attention back to the page, trying not to think about it.

"I'm sorry." Ernie murmured. "That you have to worry about those trials."

‘It’s fine,’ Mahina said. ‘Not your fault. And I doubt anyone else would find out, anyway..’ her voice faltered.

Ernest noticed the voice catch and looked up. "You alright?"

‘Yep, I’m fine,’ Mahina said, looking back down at her book. ‘Never been better.’

"Nope, that's a lie." Ernie grabbed her hand. "Don't lie to me."

Mahina glanced down at their hands. ‘I’m just scared. Of the whole, witches-being-burnt-at-the-state stuff.’

"I would be too." Ernest nodded. "But they're not going to find you all the way here, are they?"

‘I don’t know. That’s what scares me. What if they find out?’

Then you can curse them before you die. "Then I'll lie for you, be a witness of you being normal."

Mahina smiled softly. ‘I appreciate that.’ It didn’t really put her mind at ease, but it was a little comforting.

"Good. Or you could curse them all, either one works."

Mahina chuckled. ‘That works too,’ she giggled.

Ernie smiled, glad she seemed happier.
