Lily nodded but didn't speak for fear of crying because of her stupid thoughts. She gave a small smile at Anne before laying back on the sand.

Anne lay down next to her. She glanced at her friend, then adapted an expression of concern. 'Are you OK? Those are happy tears, yes? Not sad tears?'

Lily hesitated for a moment unsure of what to say. "Both" she whispered rolling onto her side.

'Both? Oh Lily, why are you sad? We've everything 14-year-olds could dream of!'

"I know, I know. I was thinking of my sister, she told me all about the beach as my parents had taken her when she was young" her voice was barely audible.

Anne held Lily's hand. 'You've me now. We'll be the best of friends,' she said, trying to be as comforting as possible.

Lily smiled softly. "I know" she stated embracing her friend.

Anne hugged her back, wrapping her arm around Lily's shoulders. 'Maybe you'll even be able to go to school with me. It'd be awesome to have you as a deskmate.'

"School?" Lily repeated fascinated. She'd heard of it of course, but didn't know much about it. She never thought she'd have the privilege to go to such a superior course.

'Yes. I'm a dunce at Geography, but everything else is pretty interesting,' Anne said with a shrug.

Lily blushed. "I'm not entirely sure what school is" she muttered.

'Oh, it's a place you go to learn in the lead-up to college. Mother thinks it's out of a woman's place to do a job that isn't Red Cross or teaching or anything that isn't too studious, but I don't want to teach.'

"Sounds lovely, I would love a job" Lily grinned.

'Of course, it costs a fee but nothing my family can't afford. Vacation ends in a month, maybe we can convince Mother to pay your school fees?'

Lily looked taken aback. "I can't ask that! I may be a beggar, but I ain't getting someone to pay ma bills for a school" she replied not knowing how rude she sounded.
