I took a deep breath of the iciness, enough to kill a normal human being in a matter of days. But I seemed to be an exception. The bitter cold stung against my exposed face, as I shuddered and pulled my garments closer to me. The snow blew into my face in a relentless attack to turn me into an icicle, as I trudged through the snow. Child of the lost, lost? I huffed at the irony. Why did the Entities of the grand conference of life have to make the meeting sight so inaccessible? Were they trying to kill me? I grinned at the thought, knowing full well my fate.
After a long hike of the brutal iciness, I stopped upon sight where the mirror was buried in the snow, got on my knees, and, despite the horrible stinging in my fingers, dug for the mirror. It seemed like an eternity, digging through an endless sheet of white until the otherworldly glint of the mirror was visible. I wiped away the snow with my sleeve, and having never known how the mirror worked, turned it over in my hands. The mirror was slim and silver, with delicate carvings of vines and adorned with diamond moonflowers. The reflection itself swirled and distorted mystically. The mist over the mirror enveloped me, pulling me in and bringing me in front of the entire counsel. The ceilings were high, with columns engraved with intricate patterns and swirling with stardust. The floors were made of black marble, the white veins spreading throughout, resembling the cosmic web. The first to speak up was Zenith, the overseer of the cosmos, sounding displeased.
“Atalanti, you’re late…” They spoke coldly, their black eyes cold and calculating as he stood in the center of the room. I froze.
Tolui sighed from the sidelines, but knew he had no room to intervene. Satsujin nudged him playfully, and Elara shushed Satsujin, who just grinned. Io and Zenith exchanged a glance, while Terra sighed. Archipelago grinned mischievously, pleased to see me. “I… don’t have the ability to like the rest of you. I made this journey on foot.” I say, starting to warm up.
Zenith sighed. “Very well, then. Take your position, I suppose,” he gestured to the empty seat within the counsel, and never seemed pleased that a measly human like me was a part of the counsel. It wasn't my fault I ended up like this, not particularly. Its not everyday a human is born immortal. In fact, no other human was but me. Being forced to watch people run through their cycle of life and die, knowing I have never been able to achieve the same, pains me.
Why couldn’t death just take me like any other human? None of the entities wanted me here. Archipelago being an exception, since he took a liking to humans during the Polynesian expansion. During that time, he had discovered how much he adored the humans and their innocence, completely blind to the true nature of the world, and created the islands for them to seek out and discover. He was the sovereign of the islands. We always got along, much to Zenith’s exasperation. Zenith observed relations with humans and entities with extreme scrutiny, and never approved of it; even if his job was to ensure the welfare of all living beings sprinkled throughout the universe.
One who had to deal with humans, however, was Tolui Monkhbat, among the lowest ranking entities along with me, archipelago and a few others. He was the manager of the mirror realm; the direct connection between the humans and the conference. I’ve always envied him, how could one take a willing gamble of death a single time and be so successful? He hadn’t experienced nearly enough history as I had, with countless attempts to finally be a true human and pass, all failing due to my unexplained immortality. It made me seeth with rage as Zenith droned on, bouncing my foot impatiently.
“You’re doing it again~” Archipelago whispered coyly, smirking at the sight. His body appeared to be made up of chunks representing different islands, emitting a dark blue aura that always reminded me of the ocean. His turquoise eyes glinted with mischief, barely contained beneath the mask of professionalism required for such meetings. Confused, I blinked at him. “Doing what?”
“Thinking about death” he replied curtly, leaning back in a lazed manner, making Tolui glare at him. “I really don’t know why, Atalanti. Human life is beautiful, honestly, I would give anything to experience it.”
I rolled my eyes. How could he say something so insensitive? He would give anything to experience one human life, not 200,000 years worth. Not around 1,000 different lives, each never able to end, stuck in a loop, forever on repeat as I watch human society destroy itself and reform. “You wouldn’t pay to have what I have, that's for sure.” earning another glare from Tolui to keep quiet.
Archipelago ignored this glare, shrugged. ‘Perhaps not, but still; you humans fascinate me.” Tolui, finally breaking, nudged Archipelago, making him keep quiet as Zenith droned on.
Satsujin, the Tyrant of Hell, wiggled his eyebrows at Tolui, causing a faint pink to creep onto his nearly white cheeks, complimenting the green carnation pinned to his coat. Satsujin was technically a high-ranking member, alongside Io, the saint of heaven and Zenith. Though he opted to sit with Tolui, who he took a liking to after he died and had secured his place as the tyrant. He always argued that it was because Io and Zenith would be displeased to sit with him, given his human life, but we all know he enjoyed Tolui’s company.
Dimitri, the child of the harvest, leaned forward mischievously, poking tolui until he sighed, resigned. “What do you want, Dimitri?” he asked flatly, exasperated. I met him during his human life; he was timid and nervous until his intentional death. But he had always been a skilled and valuable asset to the speakeasy he served in his lifetime. But now, he was stoic and gruff; yet another example of how brutal human life can be.
The child smiled at him, intrigued. “Hey, I heard that there’s a new cursed human,” I immediately stopped listening to the meeting, instantly interested in such a topic. Tolui huffed. “Yeah, and it’s my problem because Satsujin's stupid rats cursed her.”
Satsujin threw his hands up in mock surrender “Sometimes they get out! It's not my fault the cages are faulty!” Tolui pinched the bridge of his nose. “It is quite literally your fault.”
The tyrant crossed his arms defiantly and huffed like a child. “Well maybe you shouldn’t make it so easy for them to get to the human world!” Tolui rolled his eyes. “They literally have the ability themselves, it's not my fault.” Dimitri interrupted, full of her usual curiosity.
“What's her curse?” she asked incredulously, “did she get a guardian angel?” He sighed “Interdimensional travel. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do to intervene. And you know that… particular one in training?” he winced at the thought.
“Yikes, Yuri? The match girl?”
Tolui nodded.
“That's… not going to end well.” I commented, and Tolui nodded yet again in agreement. Elara, also a higher ranking member but choosing to sit with the lower ranks, had been listening. “Yeah, Xenon was furious with her after her last practice human got hit by a car. Dumped the responsibility on dear ol’ Tol’.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“Why not?” Satsujin chirped cheerfully, causing me to shudder. Serial killers should definitely not be that friendly.
Tolui sighed yet again, “It’s unprofessional. And annoying.”
Elara laughed, “ oh come on, we knew each other when we were humans!”
“You tried to kill me and arrested my friend,” He replied.
“Oh yeah. Back in the good ol’ days. You really should have had more faith in the human legal system.”
“The legal system was corrupt, and you of all people should know it.” Io finally shot them a terrifying glare, their iciness felt from across the room, causing me to shudder again.
Elara had also known Tolui in her lifetime, but she seeked to persecute his illegal activities of smuggling alcohol and such. She -
