Lol, but no. School has to make you run a mile, and every class just had to give you homework. One of the homework assignments were to write a 1 1/2 page essay about Gary Paulsen, and I just finished it. Now I have math homework. I just want to sleep. ;n;
if you want to read the essay, here. I don't careee.
How could such a young boy that ran away at the tender age of fourteen become such a famous and well-known author for teens and adults? From the Newbery award winning book, Hatchet, to the gruesome and heat wrenching novel, Soldiers Heart, Gary has written hundreds of novels, short stories, magazine articles, and plays.
Gary Paulsen was born on May 17, 1939, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has an extended family, and he did not meet his biological father until he was seven years old. He met his biological father in Manila, Japan. He was born to his step and dad and biological mom, Oscar and Eunice H. Gary has a full sister, Paulette and a half-brother, Bill. He was born to his father from a previous marriage.
What happened during Paulsens childhood? As a child, he had an abusive family. In fact, his mother was an alcoholic. All of this tremendous stress lead to him running away. He took shelter in a library on a cold night. A kind librarian handed him a library card and a wonderful book to read. From then on, he was hooked. He discovered that books could take you on breathe taking adventures and keep him entertained for hours on end. He would often be found in a corner snuggled up with a book. Its fascinating how books can do that!
When Gary was seventeen years old, he signed up for the military, forging his mothers signature. He later realized that he couldnt do it anymore. The army was not for him. All it caused him was more pain and stress. He retired and decided to follow his dreams and become a full time writer because that was his dream, his destiny.
Paulsen works extremely hard, working eighteen to twenty hours a day. He adores his job and enjoys it very much. He dedicates his entire life to writing and never regrets it. The smile on the childrens face is priceless, and it warms his heart. He loves how the children are so honest about his works. It encourages him to work even harder.
Gary has had many jobs. From being a teacher, singer, actor, engineer, director, farmer, and finally, a full time writer, he has done many jobs. Did you know that he used to sled with dogs and enter races? Extraordinary! Unfortunately, he suffered a heart attack in October of 2011 and was forced to take a break. Thats saddening.
Paulsen is now an adult and is seventy-six years old. He is living a long and prosperous life. He used to live in New Mexico with his wife, Ruth Wright Paulsen. She actually illustrates a majority of his novels and short stories. Gary has since then moved to the big apple, also known as New York City. There, he faces more opportunities for his writing career.
He has actually married twice and has three adult aged children. His childrens names are Lance, Lynn, and James Paulsen.
Although Paulsen is very successful, he chooses to live in relative poverty. He doesnt need all of the fancy gold and mansions. That money can be used for something better like education and healthcare for the people who really need it. You would probably think that its a little awkward, right? Thats how he chooses to live. Good job, Paulsen!
Paulsen will occasionally shift between homes in a Pacific Ocean boat home, New Mexico, and New York. Most of his family is in New Mexico along with his wife.
Do you know that kid that ran away, had abusive and alcoholic parents, and was in the army? That kid is now an adult and enjoys life and lives it to the fullest. His name is Gary Paulsen, and he will forever be known as one of America s most famous, successful, and loved authors in history. He has earned his mark.
Skip, skip, skip.
