On the cold wooden floor I now sat on were an open pack of light cigarettes. I didn't know what "light" meant, but Yvette seemed to know what she was doing as she held a cigarette in her mouth and lit it. She took a puff and turned her head to let the smoke float from nostrils like wispy grey ribbons.
Yvette looked at my with her piercing green eyes. "Like that."
I looked down and adjusted myself nervously. "I-I still don't understand how this works. And....what if we're caught?"
Yvette shrugged and took another puff before replying. "The windows's open, and we have some air freshener here. Besides, the door's locked. You don't have to do it if you don't want to."
"No! I...I want to...just..." Noticing the skeptical look on her face, I quickly took one and put it to my lips. "L-like this, right?"
Yvette tossed me the lighter. "Now remember--"
Interrupting her was a sudden thud on the door. And another. And another. Finally, the door collapsed as a figure appeared over the broken entrance.
I screamed and jumped back. Yvette froze.
Forrest stood in the doorway, his adorable and harmless face struggling to look menacing he grabbed me by the arm and pulled me up, surprisingly agressive. I let out a yell and struggled to get out of his grasp.
Forrest wrapped both his arms around me, trapping me, without saying a word as he stared at Yvette. I wriggled and squirmed but could not free myself from his embrace.
Yvette broke the silence. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
I heard Forrest take a deep breath before he replied. "I could sense it."
Yvette laughed. "What the f---? Like Spiderman?"
Forrest's grip tightened. "The smoke."
I suddenly recalled Forrest's ability. As we lived in a secluded area, the smoke probably bothered the nature and alerted him of the issue. I glanced at the open window. Forrest also freaked out when Flame smoked, but...not like this.
Yvette let out a low chuckle and put out the cigarette. "So you burst in here like a monster? This isn't your business," she said, standing up.
"I won't let you destroy her lungs." I could feel his heartbeat speed up.
"..Why do you care?"
"I love her." Suddenly, my face felt hot. I resumed my struggle for freedom.
"I...!!!!" was all I could manage. Suddenly, Forrest held my arms behind my back and dragged me out of there and into his room. He stood in front of the door.
"You can't just do stuff like that!!!! What the hell?!!!" I screamed at the messy haired brunet.
He yelled back. "I couldn't just sit there, knowing you were in there and what you were doing!!! I care too much about you!!!!"
"You say that, but...!" I wasn't sure how I felt. My cheeks were warm and I felt like I wanted to kick somebody.
Forrest grew quiet. He slowly retreated from the door and sat on his bed, looking down as he spoke. "Muru, do you hate me?"
"Forrest...?"
"I'm sorry, you can go. I shouldn't have..."
I sat next to him on the bed. "Forrest..." I hugged him. "I don't hate you."
He was silent.
I wished we could stay like that forever, in comfortable and knowing silence. My heart now knew what it wanted.
