^ Prussia (Germany's older brother)
Those are the characters you need to know for now, if you continue to watch the anime then you'll learn about new characters.
Basic info:
Italy likes pasta
Japan is very shy and polite
Germany is super buff and trains Italy, but Italy doesn't like training
Russia shows a very dark personality
As does England, but England is a tsundere
America is stupid, like the actual country
China is very strict
France is a pervert
Prussia is obnoxious
France and England hate each other
America and England hate each other
China and Russia are...iffy, but still stick together -
I also forgot to add that England has super bushy eyebrows.

What Sara said, Hetalia consists of country's representatives that are stereotypically acting as if the majority of the country would act, and the series dramatizes events in History with these characters. It's a comedy historical fiction series.
