About
Smile,jpg, also known as Smile.dog, is a creepypasta story about a haunted image that drives those who view it insane. The tale is often accompanied by a photoshopped picture of a sinister-looking Siberian Husky dog.
Origin
The exact origin of the Smile.jpg creepypasta is unknown but is rumored to have been first posted on the /x/ (paranormal) board on the imageboard 4chan in 2008. According to the occult-related blog Aether Paranormal,[1] the earliest known image tied to the story is a polaroid-style photograph of a dog with human-like teeth and bloody finger prints (shown below).
The Creepypasta
I first met in person with Mary E. in the summer of 2007. I had arranged with her husband of fifteen years, Terence, to see her for an interview. Mary had initially agreed, since I was not a newsman but rather an amateur writer gathering information for a few early college assignments and, if all went according to plan, some pieces of fiction. We scheduled the interview for a particular weekend when I was in Chicago on unrelated business, but at the last moment Mary changed her mind and locked herself in the couples bedroom, refusing to meet with me. For half an hour I sat with Terence as we camped outside the bedroom door, I listening and taking notes while he attempted fruitlessly to calm his wife.
Spread
On January 15th, 2009, Urban Dictionary[6] user smile.dog submitted an entry for smile.jpg, describing it as a haunted image that causes victims to go insane. On April 11th, 2010, MovieCodec Forums[2] member AnonymousEthan submitted a thread about the creepypasta, asserting that the real Smile.jpg has yet to be found. On June 11th, YouTuber Saboom uploaded a live-action short film based on the creepypasta (shown below).
On August 27th, a page for Smile Dog was created on the Creepypasta Wiki.[5] On November 27th, YouTuber CAFRex123 uploaded a video titled Smile.jpg, featuring a photoshopped version of the dog photograph with a warning to not look at the image for long (shown below).
On March 10th, 2011, Unexplained Mysteries Forums[4] member Arkitecht started a thread asking for an explanation of how an image could cause viewers to lose their sanity. In April of 2012, a Facebook[3] page titled Smile.jpg was launched. On April 21st, the ECWGaming YouTube channel uploaded a review of the Smile.jpg creepypasta
