A part of Chapter One: #05
I never thought about the bad things. To me, everything was supposed to be something happy. I was an optimistic child. I always thought that the world was a happy place, that I'd never be unhappy or hurt. I thought that every insult I got was just leading up to a good reward. I thought that my parents secretly loved me. That the hatred in their eyes was a lie. Boy, I was wrong.
I think it was a Saturday when it happened. Yes, it must have been, because I didn't have to go to school. I had been sleeping in when all of the sudden I heard my father shouting, "Hurry up! She'll wake up soon!" I was so confused when I heard him. I thought, Who is he talking to? Is he talking about mom? over and over. But I knew that it had something to do with me. My family was always leaving me out of things, sending me to some babysitter and leaving me there for the day- or week, or month- until they returned. They always looked happy when they left, like I was a burden to their fun. But stupid me always thought it was a prank. I was so, so wrong..
When I got up in my short night dress with my Dora the Explorer underwear just barely covered, I noticed right away that something was off. The hall was missing all of the family photos (none of them including me), and nails were all that were left. As I walked to my parents' room, I wondered if they were planning on jumping out and saying that they were playing just to see if I would fall for such a dumb trick. But the room was empty, the walls bare and everything gone. And that's when I heard the loud engine of a car.
When other kids hear their parent's car, it's usually a sense of happiness. They like being alone in the house, they like being with friends and throwing parties or hanging out with babysitters. I'm positive that they don't expect their parents to empty the house in their sleep and drive off. But I knew too well that if their "act" was reality, they would drop that low. They were more than ready to take off and try to hide it from me. I was scared. I wasn't ready to be alone- I was only eight! I heard my dad shout something else, I heard my brother shout back, and then I heard the slamming of car doors. My heart beat wildly as I ran for the front door. There was no way that I was going to allow them to leave me behind. I love them, even if they don't love me..!
However, I was too late. As soon as I flung the front door open, I saw the car slowly start to back up out of the driveway. I felt my legs give way as I hit the driveway hard, my eyes brimming with tears. I caught a glimpse of my brother giving me a sad look through the back window, almost like he was sending me pity through his final glance. I felt my heart break as he mouthed, "Stay safe Alexandria," before the car sped down the street. I felt my soul leave me as I watched them abandon me again- this time for good. I didn't bother to stop the fat tears that rolled down my cheeks. I just sat there, acting like a big baby. -
I fixed a small part of this
