Woah woah woah. Guys, I need some clarification on something real quick.
Alright, so I know what dubstep is, no f---ing duh. Dubstep is a music genre. But, from what I've read, it seems like dubstep is just a sub-genre... Right? But a sub genre to what? Does it just fall under the title of "electronic music"? And, how much of the music that is called dubstep is really dubstep? Because I know that a lot of times, people mistake things like trap or brostep or dance music or something like that with dubstep, but how often do people confuse genres? :/ I know it probably seems weird that I even care about the specifics, but it all started with me wanting to make a quiz about some dubstep songs, and then I'm like, "Wait, what if this song isn't really dubstep? What if it's another genre that's actually a lot like dubstep? I'd get a ton of hate comments if I messed that up..." So yeah, just wondering. Not that I actually expect many people to know the answer... -
Yeah I haven't left yet. xD
I believe it's either EDM or EM. -
Yep, it's EDM.
-
Mkay, that answers my first question about what title it falls under.
Now all that's left is, what do people often call dubstep that isn't really dubstep? -
Well, as dubstep is a subgenre, it can also have subgenres. There is stuff like metal dubstep or soft dubstep, I think.
-
It's a sub-genre of electronic, yes. Since electronic has existed since computers and keyboards I'm sure.
I looked up dubstep once, it was a really long process. -
It also started in the 1990s, so maybe some of the stuff that you don't consider dubstep, could've been what dubstep sounded like back then. It's not a new thing.
-
I like gabber.

I'd say 'Step' is an over-classification of 'boot-step', 'chill-step', 'dubstep', 'bro-step', and all the other dub & wubs.
You know why I call the genre of 'Dubstep' 'Step'? It's quite obvious.
