When I make a joke to cheer someone up and they tell me they're not in the mood, then I ask them to calm down and they get super bad at me. Those types of people really irk me, and when I'm trying to befriend them, I become offended because apparently I'm stupid and not funny.

You're right, but beforehand I don't really know I'm bothering them.

They'll tell you they aren't in the mood for joking or something that implies that.
And when they do if you keep going on that'll make them more upset. It's best to stop and respect they're choice. -
I was hoping she'd say "Oh yeah you're right hahaha". But after she seriously told me to stop and then got mad at me, I stopped. But we're still arguing and I feel sad now..
