WOLVES OF STARGAZE
By ME
PART ONE: MARIE
The first breeze of winter blew across the bare mountaintop. The only life was a few patches of grass, and a small gray and white wolf running across of the rocks.
The wolfs name was Marie. Marie was light gray with white patches here and there. Her yellow eyes blinked rapidly as she made her way across a patch of frozen grass.
Marie yelped as she lost her footing and slipped down some rocks. She fell with a thump on the half frozen ground. She tried to get up. The small wolf shivered as another breeze blew some snow onto her pelt. She rose to her paws then limped her way down the side of the mountain.
The wolf breathed out a long sigh. She could see her breath, for it was so cold! She laid down on the cold rock then wrapped her tail around her for warmth. If I dont return to Stargaze soon, I wont be able to join!
Marie had been abandoned as a pup in her old Pack, called the Memoria Pack. She was said to be too weak, so she was left to fend for herself. The rule is, if any wolf finds its way back into a Pack, it can join. Marie had set off on her journey to the Pack territory moons ago, but it took her a long time to arrive at the mountains.
She was abandoned in the middle of the mountains. She eventually wandered out on the other side when she was only a few moons old. Now, she knew the rules of the Pack.
The gray and white wolf got back up then started to travel down the mountainside again. All she could hear was the shrieking of the wind and a call of a falcon way up high in the sky.
The first rays of dawn made their way through the thick, foggy clouds, then let patches of pale sunlight hit the ground here and their. Marie let out a squeal as a wind gust so strong almost knocked her off balance.
The small wolf ran down the slope, where the ground leveled out. Some trees grew there, and more grass was starting to appear. After a few wolf-lengths of running, Marie smelled this weird scent.
It smelled of wolves. She sniffed it. Stargaze territory, she murmured. She was a bit hesitant before putting a paw over the borderline. Marie walked over it, into their territory. Im back back to the Packs! She whispered, looking around at the landscape.
There were only about twenty trees. They were all dogwood trees, with thick trunks. A few finches flew across around her before flying off somewhere else. Marie could look up and see the sky from where she was. Then, she padded forward. There were many flower bushes, and a few holly bushes. The ground had nice, cushiony grass without any dirt patches. A few rabbits hopped near a small pond.
Marie broke out into a run, the urge to see other wolves made her run even faster. She could hear the murmur of excited wolves. Suddenly, she skidded to a halt. She ran into a few holly bushes. She backed away, looking around. The grass grew long here, and holly bushes encircled the large area. Marie stood on the tips of her toes to peer over them.
She gasped as she saw many wolves, big and small, inside the large area. Pups were circling their mother, and she could see the alphas standing proudly in the middle of the area. There was a small fire in the middle of it, where some old wolves had circled around, telling stories to some younger pups. Other wolves were chasing each other around, or nipping each other playfully. She even spotted a few omegas chatting!
Then, a weird scent washed over her. A hoarse voice spoke, What are you doing here?
Spinning around, Marie saw a dark gray wolf with ragged fur and pale yellow eyes. The wolf had a grassy scent clinging to her fur. The large wolf had a mouthful of plants in her jaws. Are you a Memorian wolf? She rasped, setting down the plants that smelled of mint. You look like one, she pointed out. See? You have the short, thick legs, and the bushy tail, and the small height.
Marie licked her shoulder, embarrassed. Well, I used to, she admitted, trying not to look at the other wolfs scar that ran down the side of her neck.
The other wolf narrowed her eyes. Why?
I was considered weak. You see, I was the smallest wolf ever born. I was so light that one of my newborn sibling couldve picked me up and carried me across the whole entire mountain!
The wolf sighed. Okay, they tend to do that a lot. By the way, my name is Moss. I am Heal Wolf of the Stargazian wolves. Moss picked up her herbs, then mumbled, Welcome to our camp. According to the rules, you made it back, and you are welcome. You will need to talk to the alphas. Follow me.
Marie nodded shyly. Suddenly, the Heal Wolf jumped over the prickly bushes, then landed on the other side. She copied. The small wolf followed Moss around the camp.
The camp had the same soft, cool grass. The sky was clear no trees were blocking the sky, and the camp was dappled with sunlight. The wolves all stopped what they were doing to watch.
An ash colored wolf jumped up to Moss. What are you thinking, bringing an enemy back to camp? Shes a Memorian, dont you know?
Moss rolled her eyes, then set down the herbs. Cinder, she was abandoned as a pup and found her way back. Now take this catmint back to the medicine den, okay? She snapped.
Cinder picked them up, then walked away, her tail flicking in annoyance.
Marie didnt want to look around anymore at all of the rude stares. She kept her head down, and tried not to look around. They soon arrived to a hole lined with stone.
Moss climbed in, then started to walk down. Marie followed.
There were stone walls around them. Before she knew it, the tunnel got bigger and bigger until they entered a huge cave.
Jars of fireflies hung from the ceiling, and there were paw prints on the walls. In the middle of it, there were some caribou pelts, where the alphas slept. Pelts of rabbits, cats, caribou and deer pelts were sewn together to make the ground soft and comfortable.
Two wolves were in the middle of the den, sitting together, murmuring. One was bright white with beautiful chocolate-brown eyes. The other was black with very faint dark brown stripes on him. He watched Marie is with narrowed yellow eyes.
The white wolf stepped forward. Why have you brought this Memorian wolf? She asked, staring at Maries small size.
Moss dipped her head in respect. Icedrop, this is a wolf who claims she had been abandoned as a weak pup up in the mountains. She is Memorian, indeed she is, she barked softly.
Icedrop looked at Marie. Whats you name? She asked.
Marie.
Very Memorian indeed, she murmured, looking her up and down.
The other wolf finally spoke. We shouldnt trust her! He growled, baring his teeth at the smaller wolf.
Icedrop pushed him back with her paw. No! Dont hurt her, Dark!
Marie was so confused. Stop fighting! Im telling the truth! She snapped.
Moss stared at her with wide eyes.
Dark stepped up, his teeth bared into a nasty snarl. You dare talk to an alpha like that? He asked, tail raised.
Icedrop stared at her with a hard gaze. He eyes softened. I dont blame her. This isnt a very good first impression. After all, the Memoria Pack isnt very good friends with us Stargazian wolves, she said.
Dark lashed his tail, but said nothing.
She is definitely a Memorian wolf, and she is smaller than the average wolf. She also smells of mountains, Moss said, ignoring Darks growling.
Marie flattened her ears. They dont want me here, she thought.
Icedrop looked down at Marie. Marie, how old are you, dear?
Marie stood up. I am exactly forty moons old. So I am a little over three years old, she mumbled quietly.
Icedrop looked surprised. Were you supposed to become an omega? Or another rank?
A gamma. Until the alphas decided that I was too small and weak to be a wolf of the Pack.
Dark spoke up. We should give her a few moons, he agreed, giving her a hard stare.
Marie couldnt help but give her tail a few wags. Really? She asked, her -
ears shoved forward.
Icedrop nodded. Yes, but you have to start out as an omega, the lowest rank, she said.
Marie nodded. Its okay, she whispered, her eyes filling with tears.
Icedrop and Dark escorted her and Moss out of their den. Marie spotted the omegas.
There were two omegas. One was a reddish wolf with green eyes and black paws. The other was a small pup with dappled gray fur and green eyes.
Hi. Ive heard you joined the pack, the red wolf said to her.
How do you guys already know?
The dappled pup squeaked, Here in the Stargaze pack, news travels very quick. He licked his gray paw then drew it over his ear, watching her.
The red and black wolf padded up to her. My name is Raven, and this is Minnow. He had to be an omega, because of his paw. Show her, Minnow, she said.
Minnow held up left paw. It was twisted to the side. I was born with this, he explained.
Marie nodded. My name is Marie. She looked around, embarrassed.
Raven nodded, then barked, We know. Would you like us to show you around? She asked, her tail wagging slightly.
Minnow bounced to her paws. Yeah! We love showing other wolves around our Pack. Its fun! He yipped, smiling.
Marie followed Raven to the far side of the camp. The grass got longer until it rose just above Maries ear-tips.
Raven pointed to the long grass. Follow me. They walked inside the grass, which thinned out into another grassy area. This is the Heal Wolf den. Youve already met moss, and this is her apprentice, Cinder. Cinder and Moss were sorting some plants together in piles.
There were two sticks sticking out of the ground. There was a cobweb in between the sticks.
They let spiders spin their webs in between the sticks so they can take down the webs and add it to their herbs, Minnow explained as Cinder took down the web, carefully wrapping it around her paw.
This is where we grow some plants, Moss piped up as she finished sorting the herbs. She pointed to a patch of fertile soil, where a few green shoots were sticking out of the ground. This is marigold, she said, picking a small yellow flower out of the ground.
In the far side of the small clearing was a pond. There were a few lily pads, and some flower petals floated on the surface.
We sleep in our den we dug! Cinder exclaimed, showing them a small hole, which led to a small cave. There were two deer pelts where they slept on.
Raven led them out of the small clearing and back into camp.
Minnow caught up with them. He said, This is the nursery, where the pups are born and raised.
The nursery was a thick tree stump with a large hollow carved out of the side. Three full-grown wolves and about twelve pups could fit inside.
A beige wolf poked her head out of the stump. A small gray and red pup stuck his head out, too. Is this the new wolf? The beige wolf asked Raven.
Raven nodded. This is Marie, from the Memoria Pack!
The pup wrinkled his nose. No wonder why I smelled Memorian wolves, he said under his breath.
Shush up, River! She growled. You know thats rude!
River muttered under his breath before going back into the nursery.
The omegas shifted their weight nervously. Minnow said, Thank you for letting us look at the nursery, Sandy, he said before walking off to another part of the camp.
Raven and Marie walked side-by-side as they followed Minnow.
Minnow was at a large hole in the ground. This is where the Fight and Hunt wolves sleep, he said as he went down the hole.
Marie followed. This cave was just like the alphas cave, except the ground wasnt covered in animal pelts. Instead, it was covered with feathers and moss. Fight Wolves fight in battle, and Hunt wolves hunt for food for us. They send out groups of wolves, and the Lead Wolf tells them what to do. Same with Fight Wolves He murmured as he stepped over a sleeping wolf. Dont wake Dawn up. Shell be mad as a bumblebee if you take its honey!
Marie chuckled, but she could tell that the pup was being serious. Raven padded on, where she showed her another cave just like the other one.
Minnow led her down the tunnel and into the cave. And this is the Messenger Wolf cave, for the two Messaging Wolves, Minnow finished.
Marie noticed that he didnt show them a cave for the omegas. Where do we sleep?
Raven let out a laugh. She replied, Out of the camp area. All omegas are forbidden to sleep inside the Packs camp!
Minnow nodded. We sleep out inside the Packs territory! We have the best place, he yipped.
Raven nodded. We sleep inside a weeping willow tree. The branches stretch so far out, we are able to stretch out on the grass without being seen!
Marie replied, Cool. She looked up at the sky, looking at the afternoon sun. The heat beat down on her fur, making her stomach growl with hunger. When do we get to eat? She asked quietly as they jumped over the holly bushes.
Raven looked at the Hunt Wolves assembling into small groups, the Lead Wolf barking orders.
The Lead Hunt Wolf was a beautiful black wolf with amber eyes. She was drawing a hunting plan on the ground with a claw.
Thats Holly, Minnow said.
Marie nodded as she watched the wolves gather then leap over the barrier before running off into the forest. So dont we eat last? She asked, tilting her head to one side.
Yep, Raven sighed. But we normally go out and catch a rabbit or something after sundown when we go to our den.
Raven catches the best rabbits! Minnow exclaimed, licking his lips.
Marie laughed. Wow. She padded across the camp then sat in the middle of it, letting the sun warm her fur. Its not everyday that she got to do this she was always exposed to cold, bare rock and snow every single day until now. I love the sun. Too bad winters on its way, she said.
Minnow and Raven had joined her in the sun. Minnow rolled over onto his back, squirming around on the cool, soft grass. Stargaze is awesome. I mean, look at this place! We have the coolest camp, barrier, and we are exposed to the sky! We get to sun ourselves, and when its raining, water fills up in that dip in the ground to form a large puddle for drinking! He pointed to a small dip in the ground. A few water drops were still inside. Also, we have the best camp type of thing back at our willow tree, and we have the greatest wolves!
Marie smiled. Yep, she whispered, smiling up at the beaming sun.
Raven finally spoke up. Watch out, here comes the prey!
The Hunt Wolves were dragging a young buck inside the camp. Alphas, come and eat! Holly barked loudly.
Icedrop and Dark made their way to the prey. Thanks, Icedrop said, her white fur sparkling in the sunlight. Dark grumbled his thanks after a while. He tore into the prey eating.
Ravens neck fur fluffed up a little. I dont trust him one bit, she murmured before forcing her fur flat.
Why not? Marie asked.
Hes half Dewian wolf. The Dew Pack lives far out north, out on the meadows of the Endless Grass. Dew Wolves are among the smartest of all wolves, and he found his way back as a pup, of course. Then he got exiled, trialed for murder. He did do it, but he said he was protecting someone else, who he claimed to be Icedrop. Its all true, but something about him joining our Pack gives the creeps, She muttered, not taking her eyes off of Dark.
Minnow shook his head. You think everyones suspicious! He growled under his breath.
By the time it was there turn to eat, there was only about three bits of meat left; they each took one. Minnow gulped his down quickly, Raven took forever, and Marie sat there, chewing slowly as she thought about what had happened.
The sun started to sink down, making it really cold. The grass didnt help, either. The grass was just as cold as the air. Some stars appeared, and the full moon floated up in the air, dappling the ground with moonlight.
Minnow jumped over the holly bushes. Follow me to our den! He called behind his shoulder.
Marie followed the dappled gray pup.
She w -
s led to a huge willow tree. The branched did stretch really far. They ducked underneath the branches, and under the tree.
The tree had a soft trunk, which had a few mushrooms growing on it, and a few blue flowers were crawling their way up the trunk on some vines. The grass was short and soft, and a few finches made some nests on the branches of the weeping willow tree. The branches stretched about twenty feet out, making enough room for about five wolves. There was a small pond by the edge of the tree where a few koi fish swam around.
Raven lay down on the sweet-smelling grass, then blinked sleepily at Minnow with her green eyes before falling asleep. Minnow curled up by the trunk of the tree then fell asleep.
Only Marie remained awake. She stretched out on the grass, peering through the branches of the willow tree. Is this really what I want to do? She thought. I kind of liked being a Lone Wolf No! Ill give being an omega about a year. She fell asleep.
The next day, Marie woke up with a start. She could hear rain pouring hard onto the ground, thunder booming, and lightning lit up the sky. Raven was already awake. Minnow was, too. He was turning around in frantic circles.
Marie laughed then let the pup climb up onto her back to sit in-between her shoulder blades. Whats wrong, little pup? She asked.
Minnow started to bury his muzzle into her fur. Im afweed off funderforms, he muttered into her fur. She couldnt understand a word he was saying.
Raven replied with an amused glance at Minnow, He said that hes afraid of thunderstorms.
Marie nodded. I was too when I was a pup, alone in the woods. The lightning was the scary part. What is he afraid of?
Minnow muttered, Funder!
Raven replied, He said thunder.
Marie shook Minnow off of her shoulders. Thunder cant hurt you! Yes, its loud and just a tad bit scary, but it cant hurt you. See? She stuck a paw out into the rain just as thunder boomed. She pulled her paw back in. It didnt hurt me, she said comfortably to the pup.
Minnow didnt move. Maybe, he said, sticking his paw outside. Nothing hurt him!
Raven narrowed her eyes at Marie before going back to what she was doing. She was digging in the roots, pulling some sweet-smelling flowers out.
Marie padded over to her. Whats that? She asked.
Raven squeezed the flower with her paw. The sweet-smelling stuff oozed out of it. Its honeysuckle. It has honey in it. Drink up, itll give you energy, she explained.
Minnow bounded up to it and started to lap it up with his small pink tongue. His stomach gave a satisfied growl.
Marie, hesitantly, put a paw out and dabbed it inside and licked her paw. Good, she murmured.
Raven laughed and gave her red and black fur a lick. She looked around, amused. Time to get back!
Marie nodded. Home at last, she murmured.

Moss looked around at the familiar forest around her. She breathed in the scent of fresh grass. -
