I'm just trying to figure out why almost every rpg starts out with a kid being sent on a quest when he's inexperienced/too young/stupid.

Exactly! I'm just sitting here like '._. wut'. I mean, I guess it would be kinda boring if they didn't know how to fight from the beginning, but still.
