There are several mental health conditions that can cause someone to force themselves to be stoic and push others away. These behaviors are often coping mechanisms for underlying issues such as trauma, fear of rejection, and difficulty with emotional regulation.
Personality disorders
Schizoid personality disorder: Individuals with schizoid personality disorder have a persistent pattern of social detachment and a very limited range of emotional expression. They genuinely prefer solitary activities, have little interest in relationships, and appear cold and indifferent to others' praise or criticism.
Avoidant personality disorder: This condition is characterized by extreme shyness, feelings of inadequacy, and a profound fear of rejection. People with avoidant personality disorder often desire close relationships but actively push others away to protect themselves from potential hurt and humiliation.
Borderline personality disorder: People with BPD experience intense mood swings and a fear of abandonment, which can lead to a "push-pull" dynamic in their relationships. They may push people away to test their commitment or out of the intense pain and anger they feel, fearing that others will inevitably abandon them.
Schizotypal personality disorder: Those with schizotypal personality disorder often exhibit severe social anxiety and feel uncomfortable with close relationships, leading them to be loners. Their emotions may appear flat or inappropriate, and they can hold strange beliefs that make social connection difficult.
Trauma-related disorders
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event can lead to emotional numbing and detachment, both core symptoms of PTSD. People with PTSD may avoid thoughts, feelings, and conversations about the trauma, which can generalize to a blunting of all emotions. Pushing people away can be a protective mechanism to avoid further emotional pain.
Reactive attachment disorder (RAD): Though diagnosed in childhood, the effects of RAD can persist into adulthood. It stems from insufficient care and a lack of a secure attachment figure in early childhood. As adults, people with a history of RAD may have trouble forming trusting relationships, struggle to express emotions, and push others away to avoid intimacy.
Other related conditions
Major depressive disorder: Clinical depression often involves social withdrawal and a lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities, including spending time with loved ones. Some people with depression pull away from others as a way to cope with overwhelming emotional exhaustion or feelings of worthlessness.
Emotional dysregulation: This is a symptom of many conditions, particularly personality disorders and trauma-related disorders. A person with emotional dysregulation has trouble managing their feelings and may appear stoic to others because they are trying to suppress intense, internal emotional turmoil.
Avoidance coping: This is a behavioral strategy where a person deals with stress by ignoring or withdrawing from it. While this can provide temporary relief, it often worsens problems long-term by preventing a person from developing healthier coping mechanisms. It is associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety. -
