I am absolutely outraged that the local NBC affiliate in Utah, KSL, is censoring a new TV show about a gay family.
A few weeks ago, I was watching the Olympics with my 8-year-old son when a promo came on NBC for a new TV show called "The New Normal." The show is about two gay men starting a family -- my son said the show looked good, and he was excited to watch it. I agreed; we love watching family shows together. But our local NBC affiliate doesn't think it's okay to air a TV show that depicts a gay family. Personally, I don't think it's okay that a TV station owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is censoring network television. I know how damaging discrimination like this can be. My cousin is gay, and he's a wonderful person. But after he came out, some people in our family ostracized him, and said they didn't want him around their children. This was so hurtful to him -- and to me.
Religious institutions have a right to their opinions, but as a mom, I don't want KSL teaching my son that a family with two dads or two moms is any less important than our family. And as an American, I don't think it's right that any religious body should get to censor network television.
We have the right to determine our own family values, and for me, that means love and acceptance.
