Let me help you with some things that might make it flow better.
The first part is sort of hazy and you don't want that, you want your readers to get a clear, and descriptive picture of what he/she is reading.
Earth has evolved over the last thousand years, I doubt that if you could see it that you would even recognize it as a place that once held large city's full of nonsense people and beautiful forests and natural landmarks.
I fear we burdened earth greatly with our bustling economys reaching from the highest taiga to the hottest coal spewing volcanos. We kept building and building and harvesting natural resources from earth's mantle. In fact we had just recently begun using a massive pocket of limestone found in a underground cavern as an alternative to car gasoline.
People now have lost all superior intelligence, our economy was run by absolute morons who never though twice about-oh let's see, carving out limestone for fuel without surveying the area around it scientificly, they never thought it was a dull idea to build their capitol building on a area very prone to sinkholes, and their last mistake that they ever made, building thousands of skyscrapers out of cement entirly and stretching them up to extreme measures.
Millennium, that peculiar city made of cement mounted together by a 'strong' solution. That city was their greatest downfall because one warm day when people were all inside drinking warm lemonade and trying to beat the heat, a space craft surveying the city from up above fell crashing into a variety of the large buildings causing them to crack, and rain down upon the people of the Millennium and destroying the city with a sort of domino effect.

This disaster caused a massive earthquake, the earthquake lead to the destruction of several other city's which lead to a tsunami that destroyed what was once known as "Japan " and a variety of other islands and finally totaling all of the eastern sea board, which caused the limestone mines to collapse which caused third of the earth to crumble underneath it which caused the death of four thousand nine hundred and fifty out of four thousand nine hundred of the population to die.
Now what remains of us is striving to survive in this waste land known as Earth.
Not very great, in fact I would probably go back through it and ad more exquisite detail to the text.
This is sort of an example on how to write a book. Don't be minimal in your detail and content, allow your book to contrast a unique arithmetic and contradict itself in a unique way. -
To a degree, I could easily see myself working as an editor although I know I won't ever be one. I have a much more important line of work to lead up to.

I see, well I just wanted to give some pointers and help with the "editing", though I wonder what editing you had in mind if that wasn't the storyline in novel format.
