Well, almost everything. It cannot melt through tungsten(highest melting point on periodic table) and some metamorphic rocks. The heat output estimates on wikipedia are based on the net heat output, which is based on equations. In reality, it is very difficult to focus the heat of thermite well enough to reach more than 3000 F.
Thermite will melt almost anything around the house, including glass, sand, sandstone, and your neighbor's car engine. The temperature it reaches is really a function of the proportions of metal oxide to aluminum present. For iron, I think that the mass ratio is 8:3 (Fe2O3:Al)
Other types of metals can be used, known as exotic thermites. Cupric (Copper III) Oxide makes a huge and bright flash that can instantly melt steel rods. Chromium thermite (which I have yet to try) is supposed to get the hottest of all of the types. -
