Living, Dying
As autumn approaches
And summer’s free spirit dies
My heart should be soaring
As high as an eagle flies
Freedom is just around the corner
Peeping with vivid ocean eyes
They glisten and sparkle joy to me
Laughing out a bright reprise
“Like a sunset on the tree leaves
Or the smile of a sunrise
Are the opportunities waiting for you
It’s here your future lies”
But my heart is full of tumult
My mind a thrashing gale
The tempest swirls and sails shred
They quiver at fury’s wail
Love and war are fair they say
Romance bright and hale
No one mentions how they break you
How a cheery day turns stale
Pulled in opposite directions now
Which of two loves will prevail?
So many questions and worries flood
Will I live to tell the tale?
When soon I drift and float away
From this temporary prison cell
And join the expanse of liberty
The choices, how they swell
My weary longing eyes rejoice
Yet what I do results in hell
For someone near and dear to me
“It’s better me than them,” I’ll yell
So freedom from my clutches falls
I stay and linger until time will tell
Some distant day I’ll reach its smile
And at last I will declare “all is finally well.” -
Morning
The sky was a bluebird, just waking up
A star stood still shining
Like a toddler not yet tucked in
The fairy flowers fluttering together
With the fragrant feathers of frosty air
A dreamy moonflower
Tucks its heavy head into its blanket
Ready to go to sleep
