It started form a malicious comment from the young Brazilian classmate, and soon that sprouted to hate from the entirety of the Spanish-only class. Then they all began to bully him verbally and physically.
"Stupid blind boy, go f--- with others! All you do is waste our time!" was what they'd usually say.
Yet he'd smile the entire time at school, and even at home.
"Does it not bother you, Roberto?" his brother asked all the time at dinner. He noticed how much his little brother smiled, even though his older sibling could tell he was dying in the inside from all the comments and torture, both physical and mental.
The blonde boy shook his head with a sad smile. "No. As long as you're with me, Alejandro, I'll be happy because I know that there is at least someone who loves me, other than Papa."
The two were not twins, nothing close to twins to be exact. But there was that bond in them that was stronger than that of ordinary siblings. Sure, they got into their fights. But something in both of them prohibited them from staying put or having ignorance to a situation if one was hurt.
They were almost one, their Papa said. Just one person. Alejandro was Roberto's eyes. Roberto, due to his strong sense of hearing, was Alejandro's ears. They guided each other through life, and found no comfort when away from each other.
It was then Alejandro realized the importance of his little brother, and knew that he would literally die if anything happened to him.
He's my hermanito.. He thought that night while curled up to the warm body beside him. And whatever happens, no matter what the cost, I have to protect him..
He hoped and prayed that maybe the bullying would finally die away, perhaps magically the next day. But it continued one for a few more months before it actually reached an end.
The same boy Esteban and his friend Javier were kicking Roberto at lunch again. The blind boy could do nothing, only attempt to cover his head as the blows came. He refrained from crying.
"Poor baby. Do you want your brother?" the cruel boy spat, smiling sickly at the young blonde boy who lay at his feet.
Roberto wouldn't say anything is hopes that they would leave him alone. It continued on for a long period of time, them kicking him around and him just trying to keep his cries in. The whole time, he wondered where his big brother was.
His big brother watched bitterly, counting each and every time the pair of young boys would hit his brother for their own purposes of laughter. As much as it sickened him, he knew it was his little brother's fight. Even if he was blind.. He could manage. Roberto was smart enough to get through it by himself.
Sure, he needed to protect him but sometimes the best way as to learn..
The Brazilian boy laughed sickly when he grabbed Roberto by the collar and held him up so high that the younger boy's shoes could no longer touch the ground. The Uruguayan boy screeched and panicked, seeming as wild as a little animals. "Alejandro! Big brother, please come save me! Big brother!" he was screaming. Alejandro could clearly see the line of tears that formed in the blinded boy's eyes. Yet he couldn't bring himself to go and help him.
Esteban grew tired of his screaming and threw him harshly to the hard cement of the street. Roberto's body landed with a harsh thud. It was so much that he began to cough so hard that he was beginning to hack up bright red blood. As he attempted to get up, his mouth made the outline of the words "big brother."
A deafening noise began to ring in Alejandro's head, and yet he could not tell what it was. There was nothing in sight that could be causing that terrible noise. The laughter of all the kids was no longer able to be heard.
He saw Mr. Fernandez run out from the school gates, holding Mr. Vargas arm tightly to keep him at a close distance. They were both running, seeming worried about something.
They were screaming now. Mr. Vargas was going off in Italian.
With more time that passed, Alejandro grew more and more confused. That was until he saw the black dot on the horizon grow steadily bigger with each passing second.
Roberto was able to make it to his feet for a few seconds, but suddenly collapsed to the ground again. He was crying still, saying something about Alejandro.
The older of the two's heart pounded, and those thoughts of the night months ago rang in his head again.
Little brother.. I'm nothing without you. I couldn't keep sane, I'm so unstable.. You are so brave for a little one, the boy who gets bullied..
You can make it far after this.
"ROBERTO!" He screamed in desperation, trying to be able to hear himself from the dreaded ringing, lunging forward to the young man who sat clueless on the street.
All while Roberto looked at him through his blinded, wide, and confused eyes. Trails of blood were now apparent from his forehead, mouth, and nostril. His trail of tears began to mix in with the blood. "Big brother?" he nearly yelled, the sound behind him roaring through the crowd of people. Roberto was then pushed so hard that he nearly went flying to the other side of the street, where the soft grass was.
----
Roberto walked into the coffee and sweets shop at the corner of the streets that the park and high school were at. His hand felt anything he could grab onto carefully at the other hand held tightly to his walking stick. The cashier at the front noticed him and instantly recognized him as the little Uruguayan boy who was blind and usually visited with his older brother from Paraguay.
"Hola, Roberto. Where is Alejandro?" he asked curiously, tempted to go ahead and assist him to the counter. But he saw the look of determination from the young boy's clear green eyes and decided not to for the sake of his dignity.
"He's coming later. He always comes. After all, he wouldn't let me down; This is his favorite place in the city to be with me," Roberto told him. As usual, his voice was hardly anything above a whisper. "In the meanwhile I guess I'll order for us both."
"The usual?" the cashier smiled.
"Si."
A few minutes passed before Roberto received the usual order of a corn muffin and a vanilla cupcake with the colorful sprinkles he was so fond of when Alejandro described them to him. The cashier watched his 'journey' to the table carefully and without his stick to guide him, and noticed that Roberto seemed uneasy as he sat down and waited.
Twenty minutes passed by and Roberto was still waiting patiently at the table. The cashier felt bad for him and offered him a cup of coffee. While Roberto drank his cup of coffee, he gave in and ate the cupcake in small and delicate bites. It was another fifteen minutes before he finally finished and gave a little sigh. He didn't leave the money at the counter; he left it on the table. He took the walking stick and muttered a silent "Good night" before heading out of the shop.
The remarkable remains of a smile were still apparent on his shaky face.
"How disappointing that he didn't keep that promise to his own brother.." the cashier said, going to collect the money and clean up. He didn't have the heart to throw away the muffin so he decided to store it away in the fridge. Perhaps the brother would come later.
But he never did come.
The next day he explained his story to some of the other workers. He spoke hastily and even became a bit emotional as he spoke.
The Chilean baker in front of him seemed confused for a second. When his friend finally finished speaking to him, he quickly responded.
"But Victor, that's not possible. Alejandro passed away a month ago when he saved his brother from a truck."
