| I say yes. I'm not saying you need to be fully literate just to get into the country, but you should be able to ask people questions and carry out conversations. If you want to speak Spanish amongst yourselves, fine, but this is our country and we speak English. I was born here and I shouldn't have to adapt to you by learning Spanish. | |

| I agree. I don't think I could have said it any better myself. | |

| I disagree to some point. People should be able to have pride in their heratige without being shunned by racists. Yet I do agree, those coming to the United States from other countries should have enough English knowledge. | |

| Yea, sorry if that came off a little bit racist. Not really the way I meant it at all. | |

| I say that every country should have a single language they do everything official in, while socially and privately people can speak whatever they want. So, yes, I think it's important that a country has unity with one language. | |

| Yeah, when everyone was immigrating here, they had to learn English, why should that change? | |

If I were to move to another country, I would expect to need some knowledge of their language. If I sent my kids to school in Frnace, they would be taught in French; if I sent them to school in Mexico, they would be taught in Spanish, etc., etc. We seem to be the only people who teach school in 42 different languages. Kids pick up languages quickly and even if they drop a year behind in school, it wouldn't hurt them. As for people who want citizenship here, I would require that they speak and read English well enough to make an informed vote. So, yes, I would like to make English the official language. | |
