The top 3-5 programs in my chosen field.
I wasn't sure what I wanted, so I applied to several different kinds of programs to see where I'd get in
I only applied to one program - I tried getting in several times before I finally made it

6. How did you arrive at your specialized area of study or thesis topic?
I've been gradually zeroing in on these ideas as my education has progressed from undergrad right up to finishing my degree.
I've known exactly what I wanted to do from the beginning.
I'm not sure, I just kind of fell into this.

I lie. Anything is better than "grad student."
I name my field of speciality and often give them a long description of my thesis.
I mutter, "grad student," and if they ask anything more I say, "I don't really like to talk about it."
I tell them all about my teaching and the committee I've just organized.
12. What other activities have you voluntarily engaged in while in grad school (i.e., not to fulfill requirements to exclusively to pad your CV)?
Teaching or committee work

Oh my God, I'm supposed to be published ALREADY??!!

Try to get his/her attention because you've been meaning to ask him/her something
