  1. 'His ... but ... Ron, you're not...?' Ron held up his badge. Mrs. Weasley let out a shriek just like Hermione's. 'I don't believe it! I don't believe it! Oh, Ron, how wonderful! A prefect! That's everyone in the family!' 'What are Fred and I, next-door neighbours?' said George indignantly, as his mother pushed him aside and flung her arms around her youngest son. 'Wait until your father hears! Ron, I'm so proud of you, what wonderful news, you could end up Head Boy just like Bill and Percy, it's the first step! Oh, what a thing to happen in the middle of all this worry, I'm just thrilled, oh, Ronnie--' Fred and George were both making loud retching noises behind her back but Mrs. Weasley did not notice; arms tight around Ron's neck, she was kissing him all over his face, which had turned a brighter scarlet than his badge. 'Mum ... don't ... Mum, get a grip....' he muttered, trying to push her away. She let go of him and said breathlessly, 'Well, what will it be? We gave Percy an owl, but you've already got one, of course.' 'W-what do you mean?' said Ron, looking as though he did not dare believe his ears. 'You've got to have a reward for this!' said Mrs. Weasley fondly. 'How about a nice new set of dress robes?' 'We've already bought him some,' said Fred sourly, who looked as though he sincerely regretted this generosity. 'Or a new cauldron, Charlie's old one's rusting through, or a new rat, you always liked Scabbers--' 'Mum,' said Ron hopefully, 'can I have a new broom?' Mrs. Weasley's face fell slightly; broomsticks were expensive. 'Not a really good one!' Ron hastened to add. 'Just--just a new one for a change...' Mrs. Weasley hesitated, then smiled. 'Of course you can.... Well, I'd better get going if I've got a broom to buy too. I'll see you all later.... Little Ronnie, a prefect! And don't forget to pack your trunks.... A prefect... Oh, I'm all of a dither!' She gave Ron yet another kiss on the cheek, sniffed loudly, and bustled from the room. Fred and George exchanged looks. 'You don't mind if we don't kiss you, do you, Ron?' said Fred in a falsely anxious voice. 'We could curtsey, if you like,' said George. 'Oh, shut up,' said Ron, scowling at them. You couldn't help but giggle as they scowled at each other. Fred poked you in the ribs, causing you to laugh harder.
  2. You skipped downstairs with Hermione. "I knew it'd be you", you said. She laughed. "Yeah, right. I had no idea". "C'mon Ginnie-kins, we have to finish packing!", you screamed shrilly". "You are WAY too loud", grumbled Oliver, from the sitting room. You yawned loudly, sounding dog-like as usual.
  3. After dinner you went to bed. You had a bad night's sleep. Cedric and your father drifted through your dreams, never speaking. You awoke during the middle of the night. You wondered why your mother wasn't in your dreams. The sound of Hermione and Ginny's slow breathing lulled you back to sleep. The next morning there was a lot of commotion in the house. You dressed and went downstairs. When you were about half way down the stairs, you looked down at your phone (You: Can I have a Samsung galaxy 5th? Me: sure..?) when something whacked into your back. You fell headfirst down the stairs, and landed on the ground with a dull thud. Pain seared through your back and you groaned. You stood up dizzily. The twins, Harry and Mrs.Weasley rushed over to you. "Are you alright?!" asked Harry urgently, looking into your eyes with his hands on your shoulders. You laughed. He rolled his eyes. "Typical". Mrs.Weasley began shouting at the twins. With all the noise, the portrait of Mrs.Black began screaming too.
  4. At last everyone reached King's Cross. "Let's go", you said pulling on Ginny and Harry's arm. "They have to go to their stupid prefect thingy". Oliver pulled you into a hug a little bit away from the others. "Luff woo" you said jokingly. "Love you", he replied seriously. Ginny pulled you onto the train with Harry, so you had to just wave to Oliver. "Everywhere is full!" said Harry. Neville appeared behind you. "Hi Neville!" you said. "Hi", he replied looking flustered. What are you talking about?' said Ginny, who had squeezed past Neville to peer into the compartment behind him. 'There's room in this one, there's only Loony Lovegood in here--' Neville mumbled something about not wanting to disturb anyone. 'Don't be silly,' said Ginny, laughing, 'she's all right.' She slid the door open and pulled her trunk inside. Harry and Neville followed. 'Hi, Luna,' said Ginny, 'is it okay if we take these seats?'
  5. The girl beside the window looked up. She had straggly, waist-length, dirty-blonde hair, very pale eyebrows and protuberant eyes that gave her a permanently surprised look. You knew at once why Neville had chosen to pass this compartment by. The girl gave off an aura of distinct dottiness. Perhaps it was the fact that she had stuck her wand behind her left ear for safekeeping, or that she had chosen to wear a necklace of Butterbeer corks, or that she was reading a magazine upside-down. Her eyes ranged over Neville and came to rest on Harry. She nodded. 'Thanks,' said Ginny, smiling at her. You sat beside Harry. Luna watched you all over her upside-down magazine, which was called The Quibbler. She did not seem to need to blink as much as normal humans. She stared and stared at Harry, who had taken the seat opposite her. 'Had a good summer, Luna?' Ginny asked. 'Yes,' said Luna dreamily, without taking her eyes off Harry. 'Yes, it was quite enjoyable, you know. You're Harry Potter,' she added. 'I know I am,' said Harry. You giggled. Luna turned to look at you. "And you're _____ Lupin", she said. "Yeah", you replied uncomfortably. "Are you still seeing Oliver Wood?", she asked. You grunted, slouched and looked at the floor. Neville chuckled. Luna turned her pale eyes on him instead. 'And I don't know who you are.' 'I'm nobody,' said Neville hurriedly. 'No you're not,' said Ginny sharply. 'Neville Longbottom--Luna Lovegood. Luna's in my year, but in Ravenclaw.' 'Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure,' said Luna in a singsong voice. She raised her upside-down magazine high enough to hide her face and fell silent. The train rattled onwards, speeding you out into open country. It was an odd, unsettled sort of day; one moment the carriage was full of sunlight and the next you were passing beneath ominously grey clouds.
  6. You got up and said you were going to find someone. You walked around the train for a while. When you passed some tiny first years, they jumped out of your way and looked scared. You looked back at them when you passed. As you turned around again you bumped into someone. "Sorry!", you said, looking up. You felt a grin spreading across your face as you looked into the sparkling grey eyes of Draco Malfoy. He smiled down at you. You flung your arms around him and he hugged you tightly. "You're so tall!", you laughed. "You're so beautiful!", he replied happily. You flicked the prefect's badge on his chest. "You know I'd rather not be a prefect", he said. "Suuurre!", you teased. He pushed you playfully. "Your evil", he laughed. You waved to Draco and went back to Harry and the other's.
  7. When you reached Hogwarts, you, Harry, Hermione, Ron and Neville went to get a coach. Pulling them were magnificent horse-like creatures but with wings. They were black-ish purple and were very skinny. Your mouth opened and so did Harry's. You stood beside each other, staring at them. You reached out to touch it. "What are you two doing?!", asked Hermione. "What is it?", asked Harry. "What's what?". "That", you said, not taking your eyes off it. "As you and Harry got into the coach, Luna was there. "It's ok, I can see them too. You're just as sane as I am". "Wow, that's a relief", you said with a hint of sarcasm. "I thought I was crazy". The Entrance Hall was ablaze with torches and echoing with footsteps as the students crossed the flagged stone floor for the double doors to the right, leading to the Great Hall and the start-of-term feast. The four long house tables in the Great Hall were filling up under the starless black ceiling, which was just like the sky you could glimpse through the high windows. Candles floated in midair all along the tables, illuminating the silvery ghosts who were dotted about the Hall and the faces of the students talking eagerly, exchanging summer news, shouting greetings at friends from other houses, eyeing one another's new haircuts and robes. Again, you noticed people putting their heads together to whisper as you and Harry passed; you gritted your teeth and tried to act as though you neither noticed nor cared. Luna drifted away from you at the Ravenclaw table. The moment you reached Gryffindor's, Ginny was hailed by some fellow fourth-years and left to sit with them; you,Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville found seats together about halfway down the table between Nearly Headless Nick, the Gryffindor house ghost, and Parvati Patil and Lavender Brown, the last two of whom gave Harry airy, overly-friendly greetings that made him quite sure they had stopped talking about him a split second before. 'He's not there.' Hagrid wasn't at the teacher's table.
  8. 'He can't have left,' said Ron, sounding slightly anxious. 'Of course he hasn't,' said Harry firmly. 'You don't think he's ... hurt, or anything, do you?' said Hermione uneasily. 'No,' said Harry at once. 'But where is he, then?' There was a pause, then Harry said very quietly, so that Neville, Parvati and Lavender could not hear, 'Maybe he's not back yet. You know--from his mission--the thing he was doing over the summer for Dumbledore.' 'Yeah ... yeah, that'll be it,' said Ron, sounding reassured, but Hermione bit her lip, looking up and down the staff table as though hoping for some conclusive explanation of Hagrid's absence. 'Who's that?' you said sharply, pointing towards the middle of the staff table. Harry's eyes followed yours. They lit first upon Professor Dumbledore, sitting in his high-backed golden chair at the centre of the long staff table, wearing deep-purple robes scattered with silvery stars and a matching hat. Dumbledore's head was inclined towards the woman sitting next to him, who was talking into his ear. She looked, you thought, like somebody's maiden aunt: squat, with short, curly, mouse-brown hair in which she had placed a horrible pink Alice band that matched the fluffy pink cardigan she wore over her robes. Then she turned her face slightly to take a sip from her goblet and you saw a pallid, toadlike face and a pair of prominent, pouchy eyes. 'It's that Umbridge woman!', exclaimed Harry. 'Who?' said Hermione. 'She was at my hearing, she works for Fudge!' 'Nice cardigan,' said Ron, smirking. 'She works for Fudge!' Hermione repeated, frowning. 'What on earth's she doing here, then?' 'Dunno ...' Hermione scanned the staff table, her eyes narrowed. 'No,' she muttered, 'no, surely not ...'. Your heart suddenly started beating faster, and your face fell. "She can't be....!!!", you cried. "She looks like a b----!". A long line of scared-looking first-years entered, led by Professor McGonagall, who was carrying a stool on which sat an ancient wizards hat, heavily patched and darned with a wide rip near the frayed brim. The buzz of talk in the Great Hall faded away. The first-years lined up in front of the staff table facing the rest of the students, and Professor McGonagall placed the stool carefully in front of them, then stood back. The first-years' faces glowed palely in the candlelight. A small boy right in the middle of the row looked as though he was trembling. The whole school waited with bated breath. Then the rip near the hat's brim opened wide like a mouth and the Sorting Hat burst into song:
  9. In times of old when I was new And Hogwarts barely started The founders of our noble school Thought never to be parted: United by a common goal, They had the selfsame yearning, To make the world's best magic school And pass along their learning. 'Together we will build and teach!' The four good friends decided And never did they dream that they Might some day be divided, For were there such friends anywhere As Slytherin and Gryffindor? Unless it was the second pair Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw? So how could it have gone so wrong? How could such friendships fail? Why, I was there and so can tell The whole sad, sorry tale. Said Slytherin, 'We'll teach just those Whose ancestry is purest.' Said Ravenclaw, 'We'll teach those whose Intelligence is surest. ' Said Gryffindor, 'We'll teach all those With brave deeds to their name, ' Said Hufflepuff, 'I'll teach the lot, And treat them just the same. ' These differences caused little strife When first they came to light, For each of the four founders had A house in which they might Take only those they wanted, so, For instance, Slytherin Took only pure-blood wizards Of great cunning, just like him, And only those of sharpest mind Were taught by Ravenclaw While the bravest and the boldest Went to daring Gryffindor. Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest, And taught them all she knew, Thus the houses and their founders Retained friendships firm and true. So Hogwarts worked in harmony For several happy years, But then discord crept among us Feeding on our faults and fears. The houses that, like pillars four, Had once held up our school, Now turned upon each other and, Divided, sought to rule. And for a while it seemed the school Must meet an early end, What with duelling and with fighting And the clash of friend on friend And at last there came a morning When old Slytherin departed And though the fighting then died out He left us quite downhearted. And never since the founders four Were whittled down to three Have the houses been united As they once were meant to be. And now the Sorting Hat is here And you all know the score: I sort you into houses Because that is what I'm for, But this year I'll go further, Listen closely to my song: Though condemned I am to split you Still I worry that it's wrong, Though I must fulfil my duty And must quarter every year Still I wonder whether Sorting May not bring the end I fear. Oh, know the perils, read the signs, The warning history shows, For our Hogwarts is in danger From external, deadly foes And we must unite inside her Or we'll crumble from within I have told you, I have warned you ... Let the Sorting now begin.
  10. "Finally!", you said, as the Hall broke into applause. Branched out a bit this year, hasn't it?' said Ron, his eyebrows raised. 'Too right it has,' said Harry. The Sorting Hat usually confined itself to describing the different qualities looked for by each of the four Hogwarts houses and its own role in Sorting them. You could not remember it ever trying to give the school advice before. 'I wonder if it's ever given warnings before?' said Hermione, sounding slightly anxious. 'Yes, indeed,' said Nearly Headless Nick knowledgeably, leaning across Neville towards her (Neville winced; it was very uncomfortable to have a ghost lean through you). 'The Hat feels itself honour-bound to give the school due warning whenever it feels--' But Professor McGonagall, who was waiting to read out the list of first-years' names, was giving the whispering students the sort of look that scorches. Nearly Headless Nick placed a see-through finger to his lips and sat primly upright again as the muttering came to an abrupt end. With a last frowning look that swept the lour house tables, Professor McGonagall lowered her eyes to her long piece of parchment and called out the first name.
