He definitely didn't expect to see a hybrid control car-- his father's control car, nonetheless-- driving slowly down the street. Then he heard a bloodcurdling cry from one of the apartments above.
-
Maiko had gone to the window after a few minutes, opening them up. The glass was too musty and gross from age and carelessness to see through without opening them. Staring out, within another moment, he saw a hybrid control car slowly making its way towards the building on the street. Maiko's first assumption was that it was coming for him, and in fear, he let out a long howl-scream, then hurried to hide behind the couch.
-
He watched as his father parked and stepped out of the car. He was quickly told to get into the vehicle, and watched as his father walked into the apartment building.
-
Maiko's owner was grumbling a dragging the fox out from behind the couch soon.
"Hiding? They can damn well take you," he grumbled, opening the door and pushing the shaking hybrid out into the hallway of the building. Neighbors, who'd come out to see what was going on, stared at him with wide eyes, while Maiko clawed at the locked door and cried. -
Cornelius walked over to the car, and after finding the front seat strewn with paperwork and a lunch bag, he crawled into the backseat. He wasn't afraid of riding with a hybrid, since they were hardly dangerous. He waited patiently.
His father looked down at the hybrid, and handcuffed it, not bothering to take pity. He knew that feeling sympathy for it would result in slight attachment to it. He dragged it down the hall and out to the control vehicle. -
Maiko sobbed and howled, trying his hardest to tug away from the man dragging him along. But he was obviously used to hybrids fighting against him, and many of them probably stronger than Maiko. By the time they got to the car parked outside, Maiko was a crying mess. He was shoved into the backseat, and too distraught to care about the human sitting next to him, Maiko brought his knees to his chest and hid his face in his arms.
-
He scooted up against the door, staring at the hybrid. He'd seen monkeys, wolves, snakes, birds, and an assortment of other beasts, but never a fox. He was almost afraid to touch the sobbing creature. His father got in the front seat and started the car.
-
It took a few minutes for Maiko's crying to subside a bit. His glasses were fogged and falling off, so he sat up to pull them off and clear them with the ends of his sleeves. Once finished, he put them back in place on the bridge of his nose, sniffled, and looked at the person sitting beside him. It must have been a human, he thought, because he didn't seem to have any distress at being in the car, and there was no visible tail or ears.
-
He smiled faintly at the creature. "It's okay... you're okay..." He reached out a hand tenderly to the hybrid beside him.
His father glared at him in the rear view mirror. "Don't talk to the hybrid." -
Maiko stared at the hand that was held out to him, wondering what to do with it. For moment, he considered moving his head to let the other pet him like his owner would do on good days, but the hybrid control man spoke and scared Maiko out of it. He cowered back into his arms to hide his face in them, finding himself in this hopeless situation.

He sighed and brought his hand back into his lap. The only sounds around them were the raindrops falling, the windshield wipers occasionally swiping back and forth, and the faint sniffling of the hybrid. -
The car ride felt endless to Maiko. The last time he'd been in one, he was only a kit, hardly more than a year old. The motion was making him feel ill, but he had no room to lay down. Instead, he leaned against the door, closing his eyes and holding his stomach.
