  1. It's kind of fascinating how things can suddenly change from one thing to another in such a minuscule amount of time. Change. Change is kind of intimidating, don't you think? Because you don't know what's going to change, whether it's bad or for the better. It's a challenge. Life's a challenge. But before I get on with my inspirational, deep, thought stirring lectures, I suppose we should start where we left off in this ever so changing story filled with secrets and lies.
  2. Mrs. Bonet said some weird words under her breath and then opened up the cabinet. An elevator stood there made up of all wood. We all followed Ash as he stepped into the elevator. Mrs. Bonet waved one more goodbye, and the elevator doors closed. The tune of Paradise by Coldplay was playing oddly as Ash hit a button labeled "CORE". The elevator groaned as it descended into the deep unknown. "...para-para-paradise," I heard Ash sing along. I checked the clock on my phone because it seemed like forever for the elevator to stop. I stared at the time, but it didn't change. Everything on my phone seemed to have froze. "What's wrong with my phone?" I asked out loud, annoyed. Gumbo chuckled. "Do you really think they have signal here? Sorry, sweety." I shoved my phone in my backpack, not wanting to look at it. "You could be nicer," I told Gumbo. The dog snorted. "You could be prettier." I opened my mouth, then shut it.
  3. There was a ding and the elevator doors opened up to a vast area of land. We all stepped out cautiously. There was a dirt pathway that twisted and turned throughout a jungle of trees and vegetation. It's hard to imagine what kind of creatures are lurking, prowling, watching from behind a bush or tree, waiting to see the perfect moment to pounce. "Shall we proceed, or do you want to go back?" Ash asked. No one backed out and no one stepped forward. "I guess we go forth then." Ash started walking along the path without looking behind him to see if we were following him or not.
  4. There was a wild, disembodied howl which almost sent me jumping out of my skin. "You look different, hon," Ash said to me. "Last time I saw you I think I was...I don't know, saving your ass?" I smirked and said, "You chose to. Not my problem." Ash swung his arm around my shoulders and I caught Alex give him a slight glare. "Actually, hon, Christofer kind of made me. He's got it bad for you, you know that? I remember when he came up to me the first day after you met; he was so cute." I blushed while Ash removed his hold on me. I looked down at the ground and smiled. "So are you guys still going out?" Ash continued.
  5. I wiped the silly smile off of my face and glanced at Alex. "Um, no. We're just friends." Ash looked at Alex and put on a smile of amusement. "What?" Alex asked. Ash shrugged and laughed. "Jealous much?" Alex trudged along on his crutches ahead of the crowd and I ran up to catch up with him. "Alex," I began, "Ash is just like that. I'm starting to remember him now. He's always been like this: idiotic and careless. Sometimes mean too, but I'd rather not speak of those moments." Alex remained grim. "I don't care what Ash says," he muttered. "Um, excuse me!" Ash called out to us. "Please be aware of the oncoming snake coming your way." Alarmed, I scoured my eyes ahead and saw a slight movement along the pathway ahead of us. The snake was made of...rocks? Alex broke the rock body apart with his mind. "I wouldn't have done that," Gumbo started, the rest of the group catching up. "Why not?" Alex asked, irritated. I looked down at the snake's broken body and the rocky slowly vibrated on the ground. Then it stopped. "Nothing's happen—" I was eating my own words when a bunch of boulders rocketed off the ground and formed itself into the snake that was dead before. "That's why," Gumbo said matter of factly.
  6. The strange yellow moon reflected off of Gumbo's armor as he lunged at the snake, spitting wads of nuclear, acidic spit. "Good going, Alex," Ash remarked as he drew his sword. April and Alex sat this one out, since they didn't want to make matters worst. I thought about my butcher knife. If scissors beats rock, wouldn't butcher knife beat boulder? Good thought, good thought. I watched the small battle, as there much be far worst things out here in the Banished Provinces other than this rip off of a Pokemon. Gumbo's spit melted the rock easily while Ash multiplied himself into threes. Ash swung at the rock and it shattered into pieces with his gleaming sword of his. I raised my eyebrows, impressed. "Ash, watch out!" I heard April cry. I looked around Ash to find the threat and saw one of the snake's boulders about to fall on him. Ash turned around quickly and fled. Unfortunately, not fast enough. The rock fell loudly onto Ash's right leg and engraved itself on the ground.
  7. Ash winced and bit his lip to stop from screaming out. "It's safe to move the rock now," Gumbo said warily. "Five minutes in this place and we're already attacked." April and Alex moved the boulder off of Ash's leg. I ran over to Ash and knelt down beside him, the others following me. A bone in his leg was jutting out in an uncomfortably awkward looking way. I was about to touch it when he snapped not to. "What do you want me to do?" I asked, starting to panic. "Let me handle it," he said through gritted teeth. Ash moved his hand over his leg and a blue light glowed out. In a matter of seconds, the bone was put back in the right place. Ash got up, good as new. "Do you think you can fix Alex's leg?" I inquired. Ash smirked. "Only if he says the magic word." I glanced at Alex and motioned him to do it. Alex gave me a stubborn look so I said, "Do you want to continue on crutches or not?" Alex gave in and threw his crutches on the ground. He sat down on top of the boulder that he moved while Ash repaired his injury. "Thanks," Alex mumbled out. He was being awfully cranky today. "We should proceed and find a place to camp," Gumbo suggested. "Up ahead there's some flatland by a pond. It should be safe, but otherwise we'll take turns keeping watch."
  8. We walked further on to the pond and settled down in a nice area with a good view of the stars. "Is there creatures in the pond?" April asked fearfully. Gumbo sniffed at the water. "Just a mermaid or two." "Do you think you can make them come out?" I asked, remembering our deal with Mrs. Bonet and her Compor. "I'm a dog," Gumbo said flatly. "You can try singing though." The air was so chilly that when I breathed it looked like smoke billowing out of my mouth. I took a seat by the edge of the large pond and took in everything that was happening. I closed my eyes for a moment and a memory flashed through my mind. I was sitting in a room, my arms and feet bound in rope. I was wearing a hospital ground and I was sitting on the cold cement floor. There was a single light bulb hanging from the ceiling, hovering above me, only making my eyes see ever so slightly. There were no windows, not even a door that I could see. The walls were painted all black. My hair was a mess, my expression blank, my cheeks and eyes hollow. I was skinny. Model skinny. And I wasn't moving. In fact, it looked as if I was a breath away from death. My lips were cracked, begging for some moisture. I could see some cuts just above my wrists and ankles from struggling with the ropes. I could feel the sadness and depression as if I were there once more. The Sanctuary. The place where I was kept when the UPA drained my powers.
  9. April was sitting next to me, and I didn't notice until now. "You blanked out," she said with a small laugh. "I've been doing that a lot lately. With the flashbacks from my past life and everything," I replied with a smile. April looked out into the pond. "I tried reading Ash's mind. He seems to know how to block my power." I picked up a pebble, wanting to throw it into the pond, but stopped myself as I didn't want to piss off the mermaids. "Christofer can do that too." April caught my change of voice when I said Christofer's name and fell silent. As much as I didn't want to, I sang a verse of one of my favorite songs. Quietly though, so that only the inhabitants of the pond and April could hear. There was a ripple in the water, and I hesitated to pull back. There was a tail shooting out, the purple scales glinting in the moonlight. Orange hair pierced through the night as the mermaid bopped her head out of the crystal blue. Her purple eyes gazed around and she stopped on me. She smiled, revealing sharp teeth. She was beautiful. She was a mermaid, of course. She propped her elbows on the ground, waiting for me to say something. "Um, do you happen to have a Compor?" The mermaid tilted her head and then giggled. Then in a sing song voice she said, "You seek the ancient Compor, but it is not with me." Alex, Ash, and Gumbo joined us by pond, drawn in by the mermaid's voice. "So where is it?" I asked impatiently. "Deep in the Provinces with a fellow one with me, her name symbolizing the Sun Season." I was about to ask her where the hell I could find her but she somersaulted back into the water with a flick of her tail.
  10. I stalked back to the camp and dug my feet in my sleeping bag. Stupid riddles and puzzles. How come I can never get a straight answer from anyone? April and Ash remained at the pond. I could see their lips moving but I couldn't hear what they were saying. Gumbo curled around my feet, his fur looking like he just got back from the groomer. Loreal: Because you're worth it. "Is Christofer your best friend?" Gumbo snorted. "I'm his dog. Of course I am." I shrugged and lay back, looking up at the stars. "Let me ask you a question," Gumbo said with his heavy accent. "Do you love Alexander?" I shot back up in sitting position and started blushing. "I...I don't know." The dog laughed and sniffed at the ground. "Do you love Zachary?" "God, no," I replied with out hesitation. "Do you love Nicholas?" "Gumbo, why do you have to say their full names? What's wrong with just Zac and Nick? And no, I don't love him like that." Gumbo perked up one of his ears and with a smirk asked, "Do you love Samuel?" "He's one of my best friends," I replied. "Do you love Christofer?"
  11. At the sound of his name, my heart pulse quickened, my palms got all sweaty, and my mind exploded with memories of us together. And then I felt horrible. "That feeling you got. Was it love?" Gumbo inquired. "I'm afraid I can't answer that question," I said quietly. "Why not?" "Because the feeling I got...I got it when you mentioned Alex too." Gumbo tsked. "Just as I expected." He hopped on his paws and headed out to the woods to chase some demonic squirrels or something. That feeling wouldn't necessarily be love, could it? I mean, nervousness yeah, but love? Doesn't it seem just a smidge early to say the L-word. I might have loved Christofer back then, but this is now. And right now, I had no idea how I felt for anyone at all.
