Although he was nominated by the first Bush, Souter usually went with the more liberal side of the court. Obama will surely nominate someone toward the liberal end as well, so it won't change things too much. But I'm still interested to see who it will be and how congress will handle the confirmation process.

I hope he nominates a woman. I'm not talking about any affirmative action or quota stuff here, but it's completely indefensible that there have only been two women on the supreme court in the history of this country. I think a woman brings a different perspective to the court.

My mom was a huge McCain supporter. My mother is also very pro-choice. My mom was not in favor of Sotomayor's nomination, but that got me thinking about how she'd feel about whoever McCain would have nominated. McCain has been quoted as saying that Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision. Now had McCain been president, Souter may have stayed on the Court, but I still thought it was a good question. I never did- I'm just thinking of it now because Judge Stevens may also be retiring.
