  1. What is your age?
  2. What is your gender?
  1. You didn’t speak to Ryan. You didn’t look at Ryan. You’d walk with Rene in the hall sometimes but you couldn’t look at Ryan. He didn’t look at you either. The scene kept flashing back. His hand, it just went up and touched your bra strap. Maybe he didn’t know, maybe it was kind of on accident. What would have happened if Steve’s stupid loud voice came to save the day? How awkward it would’ve been. Maybe your bra strap was showing and he was trying to cover it up? No one knew but you and him. You’d walk away when it was just you and him and you’d talk to anyone nearby, Lily, Evan, Jenna, anyone.
  2. After Thursday practice, your Mum wanted to pick you up and go to the market. You sat at a tree behind the school and started to practice your trumpet right there. You didn’t care if anyone saw. You just played and played until the feel of a huge band surrounding you during concert night filled your ears and eyes. You stopped and stared into the woods. You could faintly hear the football coach holler and bellow orders down the field. Chris had football practice later than the other sports going on. Right now boys soccer was getting ready to go. Cross country had ended way earlier because a lot of the sixth graders were gone so everyone got done faster. You were about to play again when you heard a car honk. Steve’s car. It always had that stupid honk. You quickly put your trumpet into its case. A pair of green sneakers appear next to you. You knew they were Ryan’s. You pretended he wasn’t there. He picks up your music sheets. You snatched them from him like he was the wind and you were trying to save them. You stuffed them into your folder and put that in your backpack while he closed your trumpet case and secured it.
  3. He stood up, you stood up. You grabbed the trumpet case from him. He didn’t let go. You yanked it hard. He still wouldn’t let go. Fine, let him have it. You turned around and walked away fast. If he was following you, you couldn’t hear him. You go up to Steve’s car where your Mum was waiting. By your Mum’s eyes, you knew he was following you. He jumps ahead and opens the car door for you. He even bows a little as you climb inside. He plops the trumpet case in your lap and shuts the door. He stands there like a soldier. “Hello there Ryan,” your Mum says. “Hey Mrs. White,” he says. “How was school today?” “Oh yeah, great. Uh, vicious band instruments today need some tuning,” he said. You realized he must’ve been listening to you play behind the school. He just said you were bad at playing! You snarled at him but he wasn’t looking at you. “Have a good day Mrs. White,” he says. She chuckles, “Have a good day Ryan.” She drives on and says chuckling, “What does he mean by vicious band instruments?” “Oh, he just has the ears of an idiot,” you said with a scowl.
  4. You told Rene you were sick and that you couldn’t make it to the next Connect Four Game night, so they had to have pizza at Rene’s or Ryan’s instead of yours. “Are you sure? We can just come over and play at your house, wouldn’t it make you feel better? We’ll do something else if you want, you’ll get lonely,” said Rene. “Uh, really I need sleep,” you said. “Oh that lazy girl,” you heard Ryan’s voice at the end of the line. “Shut up Ryan!” you hollered into the phone. “Ryan, shut up, Erin’s sick,” you heard Rene say to him. “She’s faking, the dummy,” you heard Ryan’s distant voice. “Look, she’s even screaming at me, she’s fine,” said Ryan. You bit your lip from cursing him. “Hey, nobody gets sick in the summer, what’s wrong eh?” he asks over the phone. “Bye RENE,” you said into the phone. You slammed the phone down on Ryan. The moron. You weren’t sick. But you didn’t want to see Ryan. An hour later there was –plink- on your window. You opened the shades and looked down. Ryan was standing there with a large box. And peanuts. Again.
  5. He pointed to the other room with the tree. You shut the shades on him. Minutes later there was a rapping on the window in the other room. It took ten rappings for you to finally get up and go over. Ryan was on the tree. He was motioning you to open the window. You took a crayon and wrote “GO HOME” on a piece of paper and stuck it on the window. He shook his head and leaned back on the tree. He was going to be there all day. You opened the window. “What?!” you shouted. “hi,” he says grinning and flicks a peanut between your eyes. “Get out,” you mutter. He stops you from closing the window. “I’mma fall if you push,” he says.
  6. You back away as he climbs in. You could smell the outside breeze along with pizza fumes. He shuts the window. “Now YOU are NOT sick,” he says looking at you. “Of course not, I don’t wanna see you,” you growl like a hostile cat. “Thanks, I feel so welcomed. Now we gotta follow the official rules, play the last game that you never finished,” said Ryan. “No, you get out and never come back again,” you said. He winces. “Wow, that’s harsh, you really don’t wanna see me again Erin? Really, I can disappear just like that and you’ll never ever see me again,” said Ryan. He sounded serious and his face was serious but his eyes were glowing with warmth. “Yeah, go on and get out of here,” you tell him. He frowns. But he sets up the game and motions to you, “Sit.” “No,” you said and lay on the ground like a doll. He stands over you. “I’ll sit on you,” he said. “Go ahead,” you murmur as you close your eyes. You open your eyes again. Ryan was grinning at you. He had a bucket of peanuts turned upside down.
  7. You shut your eyes as ever single peanut shell filled with peanuts pelted your face and nipped off your cheeks and nose. Two ended up in your mouth. You spat them out and sat up. Your face was salty. You took a peanut and looked at Ryan in the eye. He just stands there. You threw them at him, your arms a double catapult, launching missiles. Pretty soon the whole room was filled with peanuts and broken shell bits. You guys never touch the Connect Four Game and ate every slice of cold pizza. It was pineapple, sausage and mushrooms, all the things you hated but you guys ate every slice. You finished the whole liter of cherry soda pop and filled the empty bottle with peanut bits and peanut shells. Ryan capped the bottle and left on his way.
  8. Before he went, he sat on the ledge of the window. “Hey, Connect Four is getting boring,” you said. “Yeah, I kinda realized that too,” said Ryan. “Yeah, Rene always loses, that’s no fun. And you and I are already champs,” you said. “Chumps,” said Ryan. “So what should we do every Saturday now?” you asked. He shrugs. “Hey, when that, that happened. I- I’m sorry. I hope you’re still not mad, I’m not that type of guy ya know. You of all should know that best,” said Ryan. You pretended you didn’t hear which wasn’t possible. When he was halfway down the tree you shouted down, “Baseball!” He shouted back, “See ya tomorrow!”
  9. Steve talked to you about baseball. It was an old and forgotten game that no one played much of anymore. Golf was taking over. Baseball was the game of life and should always live on. Whatever. Ask Chris and he’d say football, ask Ryan and he’d say basketball, ask you and you’d say running was life. You watched Ryan play on the 25th. His team had won by two points. That was still pretty good. For once you kind of wished you were Rene out there, pumping your arms and legs and cheering for the Maline Middle players to win. But here you are in the seats and just watching and clapping. But that was enough for Ryan. Ryan and Rene didn’t change much over the summer. They were the same goofy people you met last year. But then you remember when Ryan touched your bra strap. What was going on there?
  10. On the 30th, Ryan watches you run. You had gotten 16th place. The places didn’t matter anymore to you. It was over. No more torturous practices after school anymore. You cut right up to him. Your noses were centimeters away. He was a little taller than you. You glared laser guns. “Don’t touch her,” you growled lowly. “Or what, b----? Want some fun too?” he asks. “Shut up!” you screamed and did one of Rene’s amazing punts. Except that your punt goes up his chin and sends him back. “Freakin pervert, get lost and die!” you hollered. Strong arms pull you back. You twist out of the arms which belonged to the Coach. “Ms. White, I’d like to see you in my office. Now,” he said.
