First Kisses come in Seventh Grade 42

DON'T READ THIS So as the last kids filed out, you said to Mrs. Bates, "See you tomorrow." She looks a little taken back when you said that, but you head out the door. You saw Rene's ponytail bob up and down as she left with a girl. Ryan was still inside. You hang around a little bit as he slowly gets up from his desk. "Bye Mrs. Bates," he says as he leaves. "See you tomorrow, Ryan," said Mrs. Bates, her back on him. Ryan's eyes happened to slide over to the trash can. He stopped. Immediately he stooped over and started digging through the paper towels, worksheets and tissues. In seconds he pulls out the pencil accessory. The one you had thrown away when Rene gave it to you. 1. What was Mandy doing with these people? When did she, where did she even meet them and why? How did she even manage to be with these people? Question mark, question mark, question mark. Thoughts whirled in your head that you couldn't explain into words. And then something gives you away. The toilet paper roll resting on the toilet paper dispenser fell down with a soft landing and started rolling. Your mouth opened and closed but nothing you prayed stopped the paper toilet roll from rolling directly to the girls. They stopped talking. You bent your head down to see what was going on. The owner of the white boots with the pom poms bent down with a long slender hand, a flash of cute nails, better than any your Mum and you could make on sleepovers, and picked up the paper toilet roll. All was quiet except for your exploding heart.
  2. They all came, one at a time and then crowded outside your door. The sneakers remained at the door as a guard. The three pairs of feet stood directly in front of your stall. They pushed it. You had locked it. "Crawl under," Jessica ordered. Before they could peek through the stall door crack, you rocketed on the ground and slid to the next stall on the floor and then you ran like crazy and jammed your elbow painfully into a bathroom door. "There she goes!" a girl shouted. You didn't look back as you made the short journey to the door. Your jaw dropped when you saw Mandy and for a moment your eyes passed over each other's. You yanked the door open and flew right past her. She didn't stop you.
  3. You ran and ran and ran into someone's head. It took you a few seconds to realize it was Ryan returning from his locker. You guys stared at each other and then he mutters not very nicely, "Stalker." You snarled back just as coldly, "I'm not a stalker, I'm a human studier." You went on right around him. "Quit stalking people then!" he shouted right in the hall at you. "Quit clinging to stupid little hair accessories!" you hollered back. You guys glared, this was just like with Mandy and you. When Mandy squared her fists.
  4. You saw Mandy around the corner. She was staring at you guys. The other girls were not far behind. You took off. Your cross country running skills kicked in. A firm hand yanked your arm and pulled you into an empty classroom. You looked up at Ryan. "So why are these hotheads after you?!" he whispered loudly into your ear. You shook from him and whispered back just as they went past the classroom. "They're all after my blood," you retorted. "And why is that?" he asked. "Mind your own business ok!" you shouted at him as you stepped out of the classroom and walked at a fast pace down the hall like you were trying to run away from yourself. Ryan was right at your pace. "So what if they do get your blood! What do they want, are they gonna hurt you for real?" Ryan asked.
  5. "So, what does it matter to you if one day I appear on T.V and the news reporter says, "11 year old girl, Erin White died at the hands of her ex friend Mandy," huh?! BOO HOO!" Your eyes were glistening. You couldn't cry now. But it hurt to see Mandy's face appear, to hear her voice with those girls. Sakura who pushed you into the water. It wasn't normal. It was like in some high school drama where girls were punching you from all sides. How many girls were after you anyways? And those punks, those thugs on the street in that alley and those punks in the hallways. No, you could manage on your own. Home was safe, but out there when you go to middle school, you had to grow up and you had to face the truths of real friends and real boyfriends. Middle school was where there were divided loyalties to friends, and breakups every month.
  6. In elementary you knew. You knew what you liked and what you disliked. You disliked your teacher and Pansy Webert. You liked Mandy and you liked your childhood crush Zach. But now, today, you couldn't decide anymore. Who do you like? Who do you dislike? Who is your crush? Who is... your friend?
  7. "Right, I'm just gonna leave you here. Yeah, sure. Ok, I'm just gonna go ahead and let those hay heads trample you over. Yeah, yeah, that's what I'll do," said Ryan getting excited at the idea. " I'm just gonna go ahead and ditch you like that right?" said Ryan, "No, Erin. I'm not going anywhere," said Ryan. You didn't answer as you head back to study hall.
  8. 15 minutes of study hall left. You didn't want to do anything right now. You put your math away and brought out 32 Shadowstorm clues. It seemed hours until the bell finally rung. "Have a good day!" Mrs. Bates told the class. As usual, no one really responds. You wonder why teachers even bother to say good morning or have a good day to students who don't even respond. You wondered how you'd feel like that. Right now you desperately needed a smiling face. You think, "I might not know who you are, but just a smile would make my day."
  9. There was this kid in class once in elementary, his name was Evan. He skipped into class every morning cheerfully and greeting everyone. All the others would sneer, be annoyed or maybe even say hi back. He never got mad, you wondered if he woke up every morning to greet the day. You wondered if he ever felt scared or even knew that people didn't like him. He didn't let that bother him. He was always friendly and he smiled every time he saw you. He's one of those rare people who are angels on the earth. People who wake up every morning and pray to god and appreciate every single thing in their life. Because all of that could disappear. You could suddenly be on the street in the cold, where people scold at you even for digging in the trash. Kids around the world were starving, while you were here grumbling about your friendship.
  10. You think about when you say hi to someone. You say "Hi" to a lady. She sees you but goes on quickly her way. Doesn't it kind of hurt that she didn't care to say hi back? It's a petty thing, but you would feel like, "Fine then, that's the last wave you'll get from me." Is your rule: if don't wave at me then I don't wave at you. You smile at someone and they don't smile back. Do you stop smiling? Evan smiles at someone and they don't smile back. Does he stop smiling? No, he keeps smiling whether or not it is returned. True kindness is given and not expected to be given back. If you were truly kind, you would smile and if they didn't return it, you wouldn't mind because you don't their story. They may have been dumped by their significant other and didn't feel like smiling to this stranger.
  11. Evan was always known as weak. He was skinny, duck bill face, and when kids picked on him, he would never cry. You don't even think he felt the pain. He wasn't exactly one of those bulky guys who pick off all the bad guys and seemed tough or whatever. In his own way, Evan was a true warrior, not letting any little thing get in his happiness. He was always... Happy. He had no friends, but he was always happy. You had no friends, but you were desperately lonely.
  12. So as the last kids filed out, you said to Mrs. He glances at Mrs. Bates. She was still on her computer. He starts to leave with the pencil accessory firmly in his hands. You quick slide in behind the door. He walks past you to cross country practice. So... he did care. If he didn't, why would he even dig that out of the garbage can?
